Macbeth, based on Shakespeare's much-performed drama, is undoubtedly Giuseppe Verdi's (1813-1901) most demonic work. It deals with the ephemeral nature of power and shows how a chain of violence, terror and paranoia emerges, turning a respectable warrior into a tyrant and helpless butcher. The prophecies of witches invade Macbeth with an unprecedented ambition and thirst for power, which his wife fuels and dangerously fuels. But with power comes the burden of debt, and with the number of crimes, so does madness.

In the context of the French and Italian opera practice of the time, "Macbeth" was a daring project because of its cruel content and the shortcoming of not containing a love story that is obligatory for the opera. It is the sick spirits of the two protagonists who dominate the drama and the music and combine both with unusual coherence.

After his haunting interpretation of "Otello", Michael Thalheimer is now turning his attention once again to a Verdi opera based on the great English dramatist William Shakespeare. How does violence get into people? Like the poison that Iago instills in the impugnable Otello, the witches' prophecies now mirror the human urges venting out and leading to madness and death.
