musicale du caractère abject de Lady Macbeth est assurément l’une des plus extraordinaires
du répertoire lyrique.

Like many romantic artists, Verdi fell under the irresistible fascination of Shakespeare. If Otello and Falstaff complete his career masterfully, Macbeth bears witness to the empire of the brilliant Englishman over a young Verdi composing there his most beautiful score since Nabucco . The
musical depiction of the abject character of Lady Macbeth is certainly one of the most extraordinary
in the operatic repertoire.
