Sergei Prokofiev's Maddalena and Maurice Ravel's Spanish Hour have never before been performed on stage in the same evening. However, these two one-act operas have a lot in common: both of them were born at the beginning of the 20th century, the driving force of the plot in both is the love passion of several men for one woman. At the same time, operas of the same age are in many respects contrasting with each other. "Maddalena" is a gloomy, almost expressionistic tragedy in which all the action is directed to a bloody denouement - a duel. The Spanish Hour is a light sitcom. According to the director of the production, Vladislavs Nastavshes, this contrast is a reflection of the difference between two cultures - Russian and French: "Where the Russians see deadly passions, the French - a reason to smile and joke." The operas Maddalena by Sergei Prokofiev and The Spanish Hour by Maurice Ravel were written at the beginning of the 20th century. However, their paths to the viewer were radically different.

The world premiere of Sergei Prokofiev 's opera Maddalena, orchestrated by the English composer and conductor Edward Downes, took place on March 25, 1979: it was broadcast on the BBC radio. On November 28, 1981, the opera was first presented on stage - at the Graz Theater (Austria). The first recording at the Melodiya record company was made by Gennady Rozhdestvensky in 1986, a year later the opera was broadcast by All-Union Radio. This was followed by a concert performance (Moscow Musical Experimental Theatre, 1988) and the first production in the USSR - at the Belarusian Bolshoi Opera and Ballet Theater (1989). In the 1980-2000s, the success of "Maddalena" was reinforced by numerous concert and stage performances, including on the stages of St. Louis (USA), Helsinki, Samara, London, St. Petersburg.

The premiere took place at the Bolshoi Theater in 2021.

The composer himself, who passed away in 1953, probably could not even imagine such a future for his unfinished work. "Maddalena" was a "pen test" of the young Sergei Prokofiev, at that time a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. The basis of the libretto was the play “Maddalena” written in blank verse by Baroness Magda Liven-Orlova (pseudonym  Baron M. Liven). It bore a marked resemblance to Oscar Wilde's Florentine Tragedy. With the excitement characteristic of youth, hoping for a premiere in the conservatory opera class with an orchestra and choir, in the summer of 1911 Prokofiev wrote a clavier and orchestrated the first picture. For unknown reasons, the performance that the author had hoped for did not take place. Carried away by new ideas, he did not begin to instrument the entire opera.

Resurrected by Edward Downes, the work of the young genius turned out to be worthy of standing in line with the masterpieces of musical expressionism: the operas of Richard Strauss, Bela Bartok, Erich Korngold and others. The difference between Maddalena and many of them (it can be counted among the merits) is brevity: duration this opera is about an hour. But from the first to the last seconds, what is happening keeps the viewer in the utmost tension. The main character demonstrates both passion and, at the same time, cynical indifference to the fate of her husband and lover, and therefore does not seem like a real woman, but a decadent symbol of a death drive. As for the husband (artist Genaro) and lover (the alchemist Stegno), they are seized with such a passion for her that only a duel (which turned out to be fatal for both) can solve their "argument". Creating an essentially expressionistic opera, Prokofiev, however, was quite rational. An exact calculation is felt in the solidity of its form, the "loop" of musical development and the continuous pumping of expression, which comes to a climax in the finale.

The Spanish Hour by Maurice Ravel premiered on 19 May 1911 at the Opéra Comique in Paris. She did not last long on stage, although both the public and the press were favorable to her. Real success came to her after the First World War. The Spanish Hour was staged at the Paris Opera, and subsequently in many other theaters - in New York, Chicago, London, Vienna, Prague, etc.

The premiere took place at the Bolshoi Theater on October 28, 1978. Galina Kalinina (Concepción), Arthur Eisen (Don Inigo Gomez) and other famous artists were engaged in the performance. Conducted by Fuat Mansurov.

The Spanish Hour was the debut in the operatic genre of the composer, already known at the time of working on this opera (1907-08), the author of instrumental and chamber vocal compositions. The "historical" background for his appearance was the majestic tragic musical dramas of Wagner, and his older "contemporaries" - "Salome" by R. Strauss and "Pelléas et Mélisande" by C. Debussy. The expressionism of Salome and the symbolist suggestiveness of Pelléas et Mélisande, expressing the vague tragic forebodings of the fin de siècle (the end of the century, the turning point), aroused in Ravel the desire to write something of a completely different kind.

In contrast to the twilight aesthetics of decadence, The Spanish Hour is the embodiment of a bright sunny day, in which there is not a hint of shadow, reflection, and the ardor of southern passions is balanced by irony. The reference point for Ravel, by his own admission, was the buffa opera genre, and he called M. Mussorgsky's “Marriage” the only specific prototype. The heroes of the vaudeville plot are the watchmaker's attractive wife, her three potential lovers (one of whom is lucky) and the deceived husband, condescendingly closing his eyes to the infidelity of his windy wife.

The swiftness of the flow of time is similar in them: its rapid pulse, like a barometer, captures the alarming atmosphere of the approaching world cataclysms of the early twentieth century. The driving force of the plot in both is the love passion of several men for one woman, fueled by southern blood (the scene of the first is Venice, the second is Toledo). At the same time, the dark bloody "Maddalena" contrasts sharply with the "Spanish Hour" - a light sitcom. According to production director Vladislavs Nastavshevs, this contrast is a reflection of the difference between two cultures, Russian and French: “Where the Russians see deadly passions, the French are a reason to smile and joke.”

Мировая премьера оперы Сергея Прокофьева «Маддалена» в оркестровке английского композитора и дирижёра Эдварда Даунса состоялась 25 марта 1979 года: она прозвучала в радиотрансляции Би-би-си. 28 ноября 1981 года опера была впервые представлена на сцене — в театре Граца (Австрия). Первую запись на фирме грамзаписи «Мелодия» осуществил Геннадий Рождественский в 1986 году, годом позже опера транслировалась Всесоюзным радио. Затем последовали концертное исполнение (Московский музыкальный экспериментальный театр,1988) и первая постановка в СССР — в белорусском Большом театре оперы и балета (1989). Сам композитор, ушедший из жизни в 1953 году, вероятно, не мог даже предполагать такого будущего для своего незавершённого сочинения. «Маддалена» была «пробой пера» молодого Сергея Прокофьева, в то время студента петербургской консерватории. Основой либретто послужила написанная белым стихом пьеса «Маддалена» баронессы Магды Ливен-Орловой (псевдоним  барон М. Ливен). Она имела заметное сходство с «Флорентийской трагедией» Оскара Уайльда. Со свойственным юности азартом, надеясь на премьеру в консерваторском оперном классе с оркестром и хором, за лето 1911 года Прокофьев написал клавир и оркестровал первую картину. По неизвестным причинам исполнение, на которое надеялся автор, не состоялось. Увлечённый новыми замыслами, он не стал инструментовать всю оперу. Сделав в 1913 году некоторые исправления в клавире в надежде на ещё одно исполнение (также несостоявшееся), он окончательно забросил «Маддалену» и больше к ней не возвращался.

Возрождённое к жизни Эдвардом Даунсом, сочинение юного гения оказалось достойно стать в ряд с шедеврами музыкального экспрессионизма: операми Рихарда Штрауса, Белы Бартока, Эриха Корнгольда и др. Отличием «Маддалены» от многих из них (его можно причислить к достоинствам) является краткость: продолжительность этой оперы составляет около часа. Но с первых до последних секунд происходящее держит зрителя в предельном напряжении. Главная героиня демонстрирует и страстность, и одновременно циничное безразличие к судьбам мужа и любовника, и потому кажется не реальной женщиной, а декадентским символом влечения к смерти. Что касается мужа (художник Дженаро) и любовника (алхимик Стеньо), то они охвачены такой страстью к ней, что лишь поединок (оказавшийся смертельным для обоих) может решить их «спор». Создавая экспрессионистскую по сути оперу, Прокофьев, однако, был вполне рационален. Точный расчёт ощущается в монолитности её формы, «закольцованности» музыкального развития и непрерывном нагнетании экспрессии, которое приходит к кульминации в финале.

Премьера оперы «Испанский час» Мориса Равеля состоялась 19 мая 1911 года в парижской Комической опере (Opéra Comique). Она недолго продержалась на сцене, хотя и публика, и пресса были к ней благосклонны. Настоящий успех пришел к ней после Первой мировой войны. «Испанский час» был поставлен в Парижской опере, а впоследствии и во многих других театрах – в Нью-Йорке, Чикаго, Лондоне, Вене, Праге и др.

Премьера в Большом театре прошла 28 октября 1978 года. В спектакле были заняты Галина Калинина (Консепсьон), Артур Эйзен (Дон Иниго Гомес) и другие известные артисты. Дирижировал Фуат Мансуров.

«Испанский час» стал дебютом в оперном жанре уже известного ко времени работы над этой оперой (1907–08) композитора, автора инструментальных и камерных вокальных сочинений. «Историческим» фоном для его появления стали величественные трагические музыкальные драмы Вагнера, а его старшими «современницами» – «Саломея» Р. Штрауса и «Пеллеас и Мелизанда» К. Дебюсси. Экспрессионизм «Саломеи» и символистская многозначительность «Пеллеаса и Мелизанды», выражавшие смутные трагические предчувствия fin de siècle (конца века, переломного времени), вызвали у Равеля желание написать нечто совершенно иного рода.

По контрасту к сумеречной эстетике декаданса «Испанский час» – это воплощение яркого солнечного дня, в котором нет ни намёка на тень, рефлексию, а пылкость южных страстей уравновешивается иронией. Ориентиром для Равеля, по его собственному признанию, был жанр оперы-буффа, причём единственным конкретным прообразом он называл «Женитьбу» М. Мусоргского. Героями водевильного сюжета стали привлекательная жена часовщика, три её потенциальных любовника (одному из которых улыбается удача) и обманутый муж, снисходительно закрывающий глаза на неверность своей ветреной супруги.

«Маддалена» Сергея Прокофьева и «Испанский час» Мориса Равеля до сих пор никогда не шли на сцене в один вечер. Однако оперы-ровесницы во многом дополняют друг друга. Схожа в них стремительность течения времени: его учащённый пульс, как барометр, фиксирует тревожную атмосферу приближающихся мировых катаклизмов начала ХХ века. Движущая сила сюжета в обеих — любовная страсть нескольких мужчин к одной женщине, подогреваемая южной кровью (место действия первой — Венеция, второй — Толедо). Вместе с тем, мрачная кровавая «Маддалена» резко контрастирует «Испанскому часу» — лёгкой комедии положений. По словам режиссера-постановщика Владиславcа Наставшевса, этот контраст является отражением различия двух культур, русской и французской: «Там, где русские видят смертельные страсти, французы — повод улыбнуться и пошутить».
