The concert presents compositions by Antonín Dvořák and major Czech composers of the twentieth century for mixed choir a capella or with instrumental accompaniment.
Songs for the Blind King John of Luxembourg by Luboš Fišer (1935–1999) is a typical example of the work of the exceptional international award-winning composer. The piece, which refers to medieval aesthetics, is composed for solo, female and male voices, viola da gamba, flute and timpani, was composed in 1975 and was already very popular at the time.
Jan Novák (1921–1984) is also one of the most important Czech composers of the post-war generation. He studied in the USA, where he attended Aaron Copland’s class. However, private lessons with Bohuslav Martinů were of far greater importance for his musical language. His work was also strongly influenced by his unusual passion for Latin. The occupation of Czechoslovakia in August 1968 found him in Italy and he did not return to his homeland. And it was in emigration that both of these compositions were created: Rana rupta from 1971 and three years later also an extremely demanding and original cycle for mixed choir Fugae Vergilianae, which was premiered forty years after its creation by the Martinů Voices ensemble with Lukáš Vasilek.

The Four Choruses from 1976 and 1978 are the first compositions by Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904) for chorus. Dvořák chose to set to music verses by Adolf Heyduk and also texts from František Sušil’s collection “Moravian National Songs with Hymns Incorporated into Text”. This is the period when the deep friendship between the young Leoš Janáček and the already established composer Antonín Dvořák probably began.

Leoš Janáček (1854–1928) gifted himself with the whimsical Nursery Rhymes shortly after his seventieth birthday. These years are typical of the composer’s remarkable chamber instrumentation (Nursery Rhymes, Concertino, Capriccio). Inspiration came, as it had several times before, from his favourite Lidové noviny, when the supplement Dětský koutek (Children’s Corner) published short rhymes illustrated by Josef Lada, Ondřej Sekora and Jan Hála. In 1926, Janáček expanded the original version for mezzo-soprano, clarinet and piano not only with the addition of an ocarina or a child’s drum, but also with new rhymes. The eighteen small rhymes, accompanied by a short instrumental introduction, are a kind of miniatures (lasting from half a minute to one and a half minutes), melodically and rhythmically very expressive and based on the character of folk rhymes for children.

Five Czech Madrigals were composed by Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1958) in the USA in 1948. At that time, he was still thinking about returning to his homeland, but given the political situation after February, he was aware of the complexity of such a decision. Perhaps it was his longing for his native Highlands that led him to compose these beautiful madrigals on texts of Czech folk poetry.

Das Konzert präsentiert Werke von Antonín Dvořák und herausragenden tschechischen Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts für gemischten Chor a cappella oder mit Instrumentalbegleitung.

Die Lieder für den blinden König Johann von Luxemburg von Luboš Fišer (1935–1999) sind ein typisches Beispiel für das Schaffen dieses außergewöhnlichen und mit internationalen Preisen geradezu überhäuften Komponisten. Das an die mittelalterliche Ästhetik angelehnte Werk für Solisten, Frauen- und Männerstimmen, Viola da gamba, Flöte und Pauken entstand im Jahr 1975 und stieß schon damals auf große Resonanz.

Auch Jan Novák (1921–1984) zählt zu den wichtigsten tschechischen Komponisten der Nachkriegsgeneration. Er studierte unter anderem in den USA, wo er die Klasse von Aaron Copland besuchte. Weit größere Bedeutung für seine musikalische Sprache hatten jedoch die Privatstunden, die er bei Bohuslav Martinů nahm. Einen großen Einfluss auf sein Schaffen hatte auch seine nicht alltägliche Begeisterung für die lateinische Sprache. Von der Besetzung der Tschechoslowakei im August 1968 wurde er während eines Aufenthalts in Italien überrascht, von wo er nicht mehr in seine Heimat zurückkehrte. Gerade in der Emigration entstanden die beiden genannten Werke – Rana rupta im Jahr 1971 und drei Jahre später auch der originelle und für die Interpreten überaus anspruchsvolle Zyklus für gemischten Chor mit dem Titel Fugae Vergilianae, welcher erst vierzig Jahre nach seiner Entstehung gerade durch das Ensemble Martinů Voices unter Lukáš Vasilek uraufgeführt wurde.

Die Vier Chorlieder aus den Jahren 1876 und 1878 sind die erste Komposition, die Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904) für einen Gesangschor schrieb. Als Vorlage für seine Vertonung wählte Dvořák Verse von Adolf Heyduk sowie Texte aus der Sammlung mährischer Volkslieder von František Sušil. Gerade in jenen Jahren nahm offenbar die enge Freundschaft zwischen dem jungen Leoš Janáček und dem damals bereits etablierten Komponisten Antonín Dvořák ihren Anfang.

Leoš Janáček (1854–1928) schrieb die ausgelassenen Kinderreime kurz nach seinem siebzigsten Geburtstag. Diese Schaffensperiode Janáčeks zeichnete sich unter anderem durch eine ungewöhnliche Kammerinstrumentierung aus (Kinderreime, Concertino, Capriccio). Seine Inspiration fand der Komponist, wie schon mehrfach zuvor, in der von ihm gern gelesenen Tageszeitung Lidové noviny, die in ihrer Kinderbeilage kurze Reime mit Illustrationen von Josef Lada, Ondřej Sekora und Jan Hála veröffentlichte. Die ursprüngliche Version für Mezzosopran, Klarinette und Klavier erweiterte Janáček 1926 nicht nur in ihrer Instrumentierung, wo auch eine Okarina oder eine Kindertrommel nicht fehlen, sondern fügte auch weitere Reime hinzu. Die achtzehn knappen Kinderreime mit ihrer kurzen instrumentalen Einleitung können mit ihrer Länge von einer halben bis zu eineinhalb Minuten als Miniaturen gelten, die sich durch eine sehr markante Melodik wie Rhythmik auszeichnen und gerade den Charakter volkstümlicher Kinderreime widerspiegeln.

Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1958) komponierte seine Fünf tschechischen Madrigale 1948 in den USA. Damals erwog er noch die Rückkehr in die Heimat, doch im Hinblick auf die Entwicklung der politischen Situation nach dem Umsturz im Februar desselben Jahres kam ein solcher Schritt für ihn nicht mehr in Frage. Gerade die Sehnsucht nach der heimatlichen Vysočina mag ihn zum Schreiben dieser wunderschönen Madrigale nach Texten aus der tschechischen Volkspoesie veranlasst haben.

Koncert přináší skladby Antonína Dvořáka a významných českých autorů dvacátého století určené smíšenému sboru a capella či s instrumentálním doprovodem.

Písně pro slepého krále Jana Lucemburského Luboše Fišera (1935–1999) je typickou ukázkou tvorby tohoto výjimečného, mezinárodními cenami ověnčeného skladatele.  Skladba odkazující na středověkou estetiku je komponovaná pro sóla, ženské a mužské hlasy, violu da gamba, flétnu a tympány, vznikla v roce 1975 a už tehdy měla velký ohlas.

Také Jan Novák (1921–1984) patří mezi nejvýznamnější české skladatele poválečné generace. Studoval mimo jiné v USA, kde navštěvoval třídu Aarona Coplanda. Pro jeho hudební jazyk však měly daleko větší význam soukromé hodiny u Bohuslava Martinů. Jeho tvorbu také výrazně ovlivnila nevšední vášeň pro latinský jazyk. Okupace Československa v srpnu 1968 jej zastihla v Itálii a do vlasti se již nevrátil A právě v emigraci vznikly obě uváděné kompozice: Rana rupta z roku 1971 a tři roky poté také nesmírně interpretačně náročný a originální cyklus pro smíšený sbor Fugae Vergilianae, který až čtyřicet let po jeho vzniku premiéroval právě soubor Martinů Voices s Lukášem Vasilkem. 

Čtyři sbory z roku 1976 a 1978 jsou první kompozicí Antonína Dvořáka (1841–1904) určenou pěveckému sboru. Dvořák si vybral ke zhudebnění verše Adolfa Heyduka a také texty se sbírky Františka Sušila „Moravské národní písně s nápěvy do textu vřaděnými“. Je to období, kdy patrně vzniklo hluboké přátelství mezi mladičkým Leošem Janáčkem a již tehdy etablovaným skladatelem Antonínem Dvořákem.

Leoš Janáček (1854–1928) si nadělil rozverná Říkadla krátce po svých sedmdesátých narozeninách. Tato léta jsou pro skladatele typická mimo jiné pozoruhodnou komorní instrumentací (Říkadla, Concertino, Capriccio). Inspirace přišla, jako už několikrát předtím, z jeho oblíbených Lidových novin, kdy v příloze Dětský koutek vycházely krátké rýmovačky ilustrované Josefem Ladou, Ondřejem Sekorou a Janem Hálou.  Původní znění pro mezzosoprán, klarinet a klavír Janáček v roce 1926 rozšířil nejenom o obsazení, v němž nechybí i okarína či dětský bubínek, ale i o nová říkadla. Osmnáct drobných říkadel uvozených krátkým instrumentálním úvodem jsou jakési miniatury (trvající od půl minuty do půl druhé minuty), po melodické i rytmické stránce velmi výrazné a vycházející právě z charakteru dětských lidových říkaček. 

Pět českých madrigalů zkomponoval Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1958) v USA v roce 1948. Tehdy ještě uvažoval o návratu do vlasti, ale vzhledem k poúnorovému vývoji politické situace si uvědomoval obtížnost takového rozhodnutí. Snad stesk po rodné Vysočině jej vedl ke kompozici těchto překrásných madrigalů na texty české lidové poezie.
