Charpentier's Medea, the second of the season after Cherubini's opener, is one of the most attractive French baroque operas and a testament to the composer's mastery of the genre. It comes from the Gallic star duo Veronique Gens and Laurent Naouri, with vivid characters, intense emotions and very powerful vocal writing. This opera became a commercial and critical success that lasted only a few months, after which it remained almost 300 years without ever being performed on another stage.  

A shared characteristic between all the Medeas is that the opera requires a protagonist of enormous vocal and theatrical talent. The Medée by Marc-Antoine Charpentier is no exception to this rule, although it must be said, – in contrast to the heroine in Cherubini, a century later– the    crowning moment takes place in the middle of the opera, when, emulating her predecessor, Armide, the furies of the underworld are called upon to support her in the terrible revenge.

The shadow of Lully is relentless throughout the only opera composed by Charpentier. It premiered quite unceremoniously at the Académie Royale de Musique in 1693, precisely because of the nostalgic and revered patriarchy of French music who felt disdain towards their presumed successors, especially if their music showed some sort of approval of the Italian style.  The recovery of the work in modern times –accelerated by the pioneer recording directed by Nadia Boulanger in 1952– has made it, on the contrary, one of the most appreciated artistic prizes of French opera from the era of the Sun King.

La Medea de Charpentier, la segunda de la temporada después de la inaugural de Cherubini, es una de las óperas barrocas francesas más atractivas y un testimonio de la maestría del compositor en el género. Viene de la mano del dúo de estrellas galas Veronique Gens y Laurent Naouri, con vívidos personajes, intensas emociones y una muy poderosa escritura vocal. Esta ópera se convirtió en un éxito comercial y de crítica que tan solo duró unos meses, tras los que después estuvo casi 300 años sin apenas subirse a otro escenario.  

Una característica común a toda las Medeas operísticas es que requieren una protagonista de un enorme calibre vocal y teatral. La Medea de Marc-Antoine Charpentier no es ninguna excepción a esta regla, bien que –a diferencia de la de Cherubini, de un siglo después– su momento cumbre tiene lugar a mitad de la ópera, cuando, emulando a su antecesora, Armide, invoca las furias del inframundo para que la secunden en su terrible venganza.

La sombra de Lully se extiende implacable sobre la única ópera de Charpentier que, estrenada en la Académie Royale de Musique en 1693, pasó sin pena ni gloria precisamente por el desprecio que los nostálgicos del reverenciado patriarca de la música francesa mostraron hacia sus presuntos sucesores, más aún si su música mostraba algún tipo de aquiescencia con el estilo italiano. Su recuperación en tiempos modernos –acelerada tras el pionero registro fonográfico dirigido por Nadia Boulanger en 1952– la ha convertido, por el contrario, en uno de los botines artísticos más apreciados de la ópera francesa de la era del Rey Sol.
