On oublie souvent que, avant de devenir le compositeur mondialement célébré de Tosca, La Bohème et Madame Butterfly, Giacomo Puccini fut, tout comme Verdi quarante ans plus tôt, choriste et organiste dans l’église où il avait été baptisé. Ses premiers essais dans le domaine de la composition furent donc des prières chantées, dont certaines, dénichées par Xavier Ribes, viendront compléter le programme de notre concert. La Messa di Gloria est l’ultime de ces pages de jeunesse et la plus ambitieuse. Elle fut écrite en 1880, quelques mois avant l’entrée du jeune musicien au Conservatoire de Milan et trois ans avant l’écriture de son premier opéra. Tout le génie du musicien est déjà bien présent, dans l’écriture chorale bien sûr mais aussi dans cette recherche permanente de nouvelles couleurs d’orchestre, que la transcription de Baptiste-Florian Marle-Ouvrard va nous faire goûter sur tous les registres de l’orgue hybride d’Angers.

We often forget that, before becoming the world-famous composer of Tosca , La Bohème and Madame Butterfly , Giacomo Puccini was, like Verdi forty years earlier, chorister and organist in the church where he was baptized. His first attempts in the field of composition were therefore sung prayers, some of which, unearthed by Xavier Ribes, will complete the program of our concert. The Messa di Gloriais the ultimate of these pages of youth and the most ambitious. It was written in 1880, a few months before the young musician entered the Milan Conservatory and three years before writing his first opera. All the genius of the musician is already very present, in the choral writing of course but also in this permanent search for new orchestral colors, which the transcription of Baptiste-Florian Marle-Ouvrard will make us taste on all the registers of the hybrid organ of Angers.
