Conductor René Jacobs describes the Missa Solemnis in D major, in which Ludwig van
Beethoven invested four years of meticulous research in both music history and theology, as
brilliant and at the same time humble. In his mass, Beethoven freed the liturgical text from its
strict conventions and created his very own musical interpretation of tradition. The RIAS
Chamber Choir, four soloists and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, under the direction of René
acobs, fill the Friedenskirche with the “most sincere setting of the Mass”, according to Jacobs,
and let the mass “go to the heart”, as Beethoven himself did original dedication inscription
