Anyone who says Ligeti cannot ignore Le Grand Macabre , his only opera and a masterpiece of wit and pitch-black humour. Mysteries of the Macabre bundles three arias from that opera into one musical rollercoaster full of vocal fireworks, which is not inferior to the coloratura by Mozart and Rossini. In his Hamburg concerto , Ligeti pulls out a completely different register and plays with the thin harmonic tension between the solo horn and the four natural horns in the ensemble. A gem!

Wie Ligeti zegt, kan niet om Le Grand Macabre heen, zijn enige opera en een meesterwerk van scherpzinnigheid en pikzwarte humor. Mysteries of the Macabre bundelt drie aria’s uit die opera tot één muzikale rollercoaster vol vocaal vuurwerk, dat niet moet onderdoen voor de coloraturen van Mozart en Rossini. In zijn Hamburg concerto trekt Ligeti een heel ander register open en speelt hij met de ijle harmonische spanning tussen de solo hoorn en de vier natuurhoorns in het ensemble. Een pareltje!
