Nelson Goerner notes that his career began in 1986 when Martha Argerich returned to Argentina after a long absence. Goerner was 16 and watched Argerich’s concert and rehearsal in Buenos Aires, after which he was asked to play for the great star with other young pianists. After his rendition of a piece by Liszt, Goerner was contacted by Argerich and offered a scholarship to study in Europe. That same year, he would also win the Liszt Competition, clear signs of his enlightened relationship with the work of the Hungarian composer.

Nelson Goerner refere que o seu percurso teve início em 1986, quando Martha Argerich regressou à Argentina após uma longa ausência. Goerner tinha 16 anos e assistiu ao concerto e ao ensaio de Argerich em Buenos Aires, tendo depois sido chamado a tocar com outros jovens pianistas na presença da grande estrela da música. A sua interpretação de uma peça de Liszt acabou por valer a Goerner o contacto por parte de Argerich passados alguns dias, com a finalidade de lhe oferecer uma bolsa para que prosseguisse os estudos na Europa. Nesse mesmo ano, venceria ainda o Concurso Liszt, sinais claros da relação iluminada que vem construindo com a obra do compositor húngaro.
