If there was the tradition of an Italian New Year's concert, this program would probably have it! All the great names of Italian opera are gathered: the demigod Rossini, his legitimate heir Giuseppe Verdi and in turn his successor Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Ponchielli and of course Puccini. The great Arrigo Boito takes part as a librettist twice. "Con slancio" - with verve - the new year is welcomed here, thanks to the overture of the "Italian woman in Algiers" or the gypsy choir from the "Trovatore". A healthy dose of flaming idealism is not lacking at an Italian start to the new year, the Marquis von Posa from Verdi's “Don Carlo” vouches for that. The music in Ponchielli's Dance of the Hours from “La Gioconda” dances along with swing and light feet - but not in 3/4 time. The heart of this program full of highlights, however, is the “Hymn of the Nations” by the mature Verdi to a text by the then 20-year-old young poet Arrigo Boito. At the beginning of the new year, this rousing cantata conjures up “the earth as a world of brothers”, to which the Lord allows peace to return. Composed in 1862 for the world exhibition in London and rediscovered in 1943 by Arturo Toscanini as a pacifist appeal, Verdi shows himself here in the footsteps of Schiller and Beethoven.
