The premiere of the opera Nikola Šubić Zrinjski in 1876 by Ivan pl. Zajc, the founder and organizer of the Zagreb Opera Theater, was a very important cultural event, among other things because it marked the birth of another artistic branch within the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb - Ballet. Thematic of the last days of Siget, the Croatian hero Nikola Šubić Zrinski and his heroic death, the work was already an unprecedented success at the premiere, retaining an honorable place on the Croatian opera scene to this day. The greatest excitement was caused by the shocking oath of the heroes of Siget and the finale U boj, u boj, which as a choral song was composed ten years before the opera itself. The great popularity of the work can be attributed to the portrayal of a real hero of Croatian history, who saved Slavonia from complete enslavement in the difficult conditions of the Turkish invasion. Although he failed to prevent the Turks from conquering some cities, Zrinski bravely died defending Siget. Apart from the extremely patriotic atmosphere that prevails in the opera, an important characteristic of Zajc's manuscript is also visible in the differentiated depiction of two opposing worlds, each of which has its own characteristics. Carefully profiling the characters of the heroes Zrinski and Sultan Sulejman according to historical facts, Zajc as antipodes created significant female characters of Croatian opera literature, Eva and Jelena, giving them a very important dramaturgical and musical task.
