Het Nationaal Jeugdorkest onder leiding van vaste gastdirigent Antony Hermus speelt een programma rondom het revolutionaire Le Sacre du Printemps van Igor Strawinsky, oorspronkelijk geschreven als ballet waarin heidense offerrituelen centraal staan: de komst van de lente wordt gevierd met een rituele dans waarin een maagdelijk meisje danst tot ze er dood bij neervalt. Speciaal voor het NJO schreef componist Bram Kortekaas een opmaat voor en tevens hommage aan dit werk dat tijdens deze tournee in première gaat.

Naast dit tweeluik van Kortekaas en Strawinsky, voert het NJO Les offrandes oubliées uit van Olivier Messiaen en de tweede suite uit Daphnis et Chloé van Maurice Ravel. Met deze werken onderstreept het orkest zowel het thema van het  brengen van offers, alhoewel die bij Messiaen juist een katholieke en devote betekenis hebben, als de muzikale traditie van Strawinsky waarin conventies werden losgelaten én Les Ballets Russes hoogtijdagen beleefden.

The National Youth Orchestra, conducted by permanent guest conductor Antony Hermus, plays a program based on the revolutionary Le Sacre du Printemps by Igor Strawinsky, originally written as a ballet in which pagan sacrificial rituals are central: the arrival of spring is celebrated with a ritual dance in which a virgin girl dances until she drops dead. Composer Bram Kortekaas wrote a prelude to and also a tribute to this work, which will premiere during this tour, especially for the NJO.

In addition to this diptych by Kortekaas and Strawinsky, the NJO will perform Les offrandes oubliées by Olivier Messiaen and the second suite from Daphnis et Chloé by Maurice Ravel. With these works, the orchestra underlines both the theme of making sacrifices, although these have a Catholic and devout significance for Messiaen, as well as Stravinsky's musical tradition in which conventions were abandoned and Les Ballets Russes experienced heyday.
