Le ténor et chef d’orchestre Placido Domingo est né le 21 janvier 1941 à Madrid, en Espagne. Ses parents, tous deux chanteurs de zarzuela, équivalent espagnol de l’opéra-comique, l’emmènent vivre au Mexique. À 14 ans, il rentre au conservatoire de Mexico où il étudie le piano, le chant ainsi que la composition musicale et la direction d’orchestre. Marié à 16 ans à une étudiante en piano et père d’un petit garçon un an plus tard, il doit travailler dur et accepte toutes sortes d’emplois dans le milieu de la musique et du théâtre. Il accompagne également sa mère au piano et chante ses premiers rôles dans la compagnie de ses parents. Le couple se sépare cependant rapidement.

En 1959, il a 18 ans : il se fait remarquer comme baryton au cours d’une audition à l’Opéra de Mexico, mais on lui conseille de se présenter dans des rôles de ténor. Il est alors engagé pour jouer Borsa dans Rigoletto de Verdi. Placido Domingo obtient son premier grand rôle deux ans plus tard (en 1961) à Monterrey (Mexique) avec Alfredo dans La Traviata de Verdi. En 1962, il épouse la soprano Marta Ornelas qui reste sa plus fidèle conseillère. Engagés par l’Opéra de Tel Aviv, ils y donnent de très nombreuses représentations et y restent deux ans et demi. Il y prend notamment les rôles de Don José dans Carmen de Bizet, de Nadir dans Les pêcheurs de perles de Bizet, de Turiddu dans Cavalleria Rusticana de Mascagni ou encore le rôle-titre de Faust de Gounod.

En 1965, le couple se rend aux Etats-Unis, ce qui constitue un tournant dans la carrière de Domingo puisqu’il débute au New York City Opera en 1965 avec le rôle de Don José dans Carmen. En 1966, il fait ses débuts au Liceu où il est Anselmo dans La mulata de Córdoba de Moncayo et au Metropolitan de New York où il incarne Canio dans Paillasse de Leoncavallo, puis Lord Percy dans Anna Bolena de Donizetti et Luigi dans Il Tabarro de Puccini. En 1967, il revient en Europe pour se consacrer au répertoire verdien : il prend le rôle-titre de Don Carlos à l’Opéra d’Etat de Vienne ainsi que les rôles de Riccardo dans Un Bal masqué à l’Opéra d’Etat de Berlin et de Radamès dans Aida à Hambourg où il interprète aussi Cavaradossi dans Tosca de Puccini et Lohengrin de Wagner en 1968. Cette année-là, en plus de débuter à l’Opéra de Chicago dans le rôle de Des Grieux dans Manon Lescaut de Puccini, il est amené à rechanter au Met en remplacement de Franco Corelli pour le rôle de Maurizio dans Adrianna Lecouvreur de Cilea. Depuis, il a ouvert 21 saisons au Met, battant ainsi le record d’Enrico Caruso.

Placido Domingo débute en 1969 à la Scala de Milan où il tient le rôle-titre d’Ernani de Verdi, à l’Opéra de San Francisco où il endosse le rôle de Rodolfo dans La Bohème de Puccini, ainsi qu’aux Arènes de Vérone où il est Calaf dans Turandot de Puccini également. Ce compositeur lui ouvre ensuite les portes de Covent Garden où il rechante Tosca en 1971 et de l’Opéra d’Etat de Bavière où il rechante La Bohème en 1972. Puis c’est au tour de Verdi de lui permettre de faire ses premiers pas sur de nouvelles scènes de prestige. Ainsi, il débute au Théâtre Colon de Buenos Aires avec le rôle de Don Alvaro dans La Force du destin en 1972, à l’Opéra de Paris avec le rôle de Manrico dans Le Trouvère en 1973, puis au Festival de Salzbourg avec le rôle-titre de Don Carlos en 1975. Il ajoute également cette année-là un autre rôle-titre verdien à son répertoire déjà fourni, celui d’Otello à Hambourg. Ce rôle devient sa signature et il le joue plus de 200 fois à travers le monde au cours de sa carrière.

Plus qu’un interprète d’opéra, il devient progressivement une vedette populaire en participant à des émissions de télévision et en enregistrant des albums avec des chanteurs pop comme John Denver. Malgré tout, il continue de se produire sur scène comme au Met où il incarne son premier Pollione dans Norma de Bellini en 1981 et Enée dans Les Troyens de Berlioz en 1983. Parallèlement à sa carrière de chanteur, Placido Domingo débute discrètement une carrière de chef d’orchestre dans les années 80. Il dirige notamment une production télédiffusée de La Chauve-souris de Johan Strauss à Covent Garden en 1983. À la même époque, il se lance dans le cinéma en jouant Alfredo dans La Traviata par Franco Zeffirelli, Don José dans Carmen par Francesco Rosi en 1984, puis retrouve à nouveau Zeffirelli en 1986 pour Otello. En 1986, il participe, pour ses débuts à l’Opéra de Washington, à la première mondiale de Goya, un opéra que Menotti compose spécialement pour lui car il est fasciné par le peintre. Il reste ensuite à Washington où il est nommé Directeur artistique à l’âge de 45 ans.

En 1990, il crée le groupe des Trois Ténors avec José Carreras et Luciano Pavarotti. Le succès est planétaire. Il décide à cette époque d’aborder davantage l’œuvre de Wagner. Il prend ainsi le rôle-titre de Parsifal au Met en 1991 et le rechante l’année suivante pour ses débuts à Bayreuth. Il incarne également Siegmund dans La Walkyrie à Vienne en 1992. Intéressé par la découverte de nouveaux talents, il crée en 1993 le prix Operalia, un concours de chant destiné à promouvoir les jeunes chanteurs les plus prometteurs. De nombreux lauréats sont devenus célèbres, comme Nina Stemme, Rolando Villazón, Joyce DiDonato, Erwin Schrottou Sonya Yoncheva. En 1994, pour la première fois depuis trois décennies, Placido Domingo chante une œuvre de Mozart, Idomeneo dont il tient le rôle-titre au Met. Il est ensuite Adorno dans Simon Boccanegra de Verdi au Met et à Covent Garden en 1995 et 1997, Jean dans Le Prophète de Meyerbeer à Vienne en 1998, ou encore Hermann dans La Dame de Pique de Tchaïkovski au Met en 1999.

En 2000, il prend la tête de l'Opéra de Los Angeles. Puis il continue les prises de rôles notamment au Met où il est Cyrano de Bergerac d’Alfano en 2005 et Oreste dans Iphigénie en Tauride de Gluck en 2007, ainsi qu’au Teatro Real où il s’illustre dans le rôle de Bajazet dans Tamerlano de Haendel en 2008. Avec le temps, il retrouve la tessiture de baryton avec laquelle il a débuté, ce qui lui permet de continuer à élargir son répertoire depuis 2010 avec le rôle-titre de Rigoletto au Reignwood Theater en Chine, celui de Simon Boccanegra à Berlin ou encore le rôle d’Athanaël dans Thaïs de Massenet à Valence en 2012. L’année suivante, en 2013, il prend les rôles de Giorgrio Germont dans La Traviata au Met, de Nabucco à Covent Garden, de Giacomo dans Jeanne d’Arc à Salzbourg et du Comte de Luna dans Le Trouvère pour l’Opéra d’Etat de Berlin. Là-bas, il incarne ensuite Macbeth en 2015, année où il revient au Met pour interpréter Don Carlo dans Ernani. Il prend également le rôle-titre de Gianni Schicchi à Mardrid. L'année suivante, le ténor tient la baguette pour Don Giovanni de Mozart au Met ainsi que Tosca et Roméo et Juliette de Gounod à Vienne.
