Opera di casa a Sassari - dopo Il barbiere di Siviglia è la più rappresentata nella storia - Norma mancava in città da dieci anni .Tratta dalla tragedia Norma, ou L'Infanticide di Louis-Alexandre Soumet, debuttò nel 1831 al Teatro alla Scala di Milano. Ambientata in Gallia ai tempi della dominazione romana, richiama il mito di Medea e i sentimenti della madre tradita che pensa di punire l'amante infedele con l'uccisione dei figli. In realtà nel finale, l'amore materno vincerà e sarà proprio Norma a sacrificarsi.
