"The Nose" is a performance-emblem of the Pokrovsky Theater
A long time ago, namely at the very end of the twenties of the twentieth century, the still very young Shostakovich suddenly took it and wrote the opera The Nose based on the eponymous Petersburg story by Gogol. The story of how Major Kovalev ran away from his own nose and what followed, transcribed by the young genius into the language of music, did not fit too well: the aesthetic freemen of the 20s ended, the obscurantism of the 30s set in. Therefore, after a single production on the stage of the Maly Opera Theater in Leningrad, The Nose disappeared from the domestic stage, until in 1974 it was revived at the Chamber Theater by Boris Pokrovsky with Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

It was "The Nose" that was destined to become for the Chamber Theater the emblematic performance that Chekhov's "The Seagull" once became for the Moscow Art Theater. The Nose has been on the stage for more than 40 years, it has been played more than three hundred times, it was shown with triumph in many countries.

The most striking thing is that the performance has not become outdated at all, and is played with the same passion as it was many years ago. Several generations of artists of the Chamber Theater have gone through this opera, but even today you can still see a number of participants in premiere performances, for which younger colleagues are already “tuning in”. In the words of Gogol, “whatever you say, but such incidents happen in the world; rare, but they do happen.

«Нос» — спектакль-эмблема театра Покровского
Давным-давно, а именно в самом конце двадцатых годов двадцатого же века, совсем еще молодой Шостакович вдруг взял да и написал оперу «Нос» по одноименной «петербургской повести» Гоголя. История о том, как от майора Ковалева сбежал его собственный нос и что из этого воспоследовало, переложенная юным гением на язык музыки, пришлась не слишком ко двору: эстетическая вольница 20-х годов заканчивалась, наступало мракобесие 30-х. Поэтому после единственной постановки на сцене Малого оперного театра в Ленинграде «Нос» исчез с отечественных подмостков, пока в 1974 году его не возродили в Камерном театре Борис Покровский с Геннадием Рождественским.

Именно «Носу» суждено было стать для Камерного театра тем спектаклем-эмблемой, каким стала когда-то для МХТ чеховская «Чайка». «Нос» живет на сцене уже более 40 лет, его сыграли более трехсот раз, с триумфом показывали во многих странах.

Поразительнее всего то, что спектакль ничуть не устарел, и играется все с тем же азартом, как и много лет назад. Через эту оперу прошли несколько поколений артистов Камерного театра, но и сегодня в нем по-прежнему можно увидеть целый ряд участников премьерных спектаклей, по которым уже «настраиваются» более молодые коллеги. Говоря словами Гоголя, «кто что ни говори, а подобные происшествия бывают на свете; редко, но бывают».
