The Ricercare for six voices is part of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Musikalisches Opfer (the Musical Offering). In 1747, the composer had been a guest of Frederick II of Prussia, who proposed a theme for an improvisation, later reworked as a tripartite cycle of eleven canons and fugues and dedicated to the king. Among the various pieces in the collection, the Ricercare for 6 voices reaches a level of rare complexity, and is not wrongly called one of the highest moments in the history of polyphony. Between 1934 and 1935 Anton Webern worked on a transcription for orchestra of the Ricercare. The Bachian page lent itself to instrumentation; in fact, the contrapuntal writing, though more often entrusted to the harpsichord, did not limit the possible choices of instrumentation. Webern exploits the rich texture of the fugue by distributing the motifs to the different timbres and registers of the orchestra, with the aim of keeping the musical discourse perfectly linear, generating a unified but sonorously composite effect and, precisely through the fragmentation of the lines among the instruments, highlighting the “motivic cohesion” well. Referring to the Art of Escape, Webern spoke of a work that leads “into the sphere of the most absolute abstraction, a music that lacks everything that is generally indicated by notations: whether it is a piece for voices or for instruments, signs of interpretation, in short, there is absolutely nothing. It is really almost an abstraction, but I would rather say “the highest reality!” All these fugues are built on the basis of a single theme, which is always changing: a big book of musical ideas, the content of which starts from a single idea! What does all this mean? Aspiration to the highest unity. Everything stems from one entity, from that one theme of fugue! Everything remains ‘in theme’.” This consideration applies well to the work done on the Musical Offering, whose orchestration renders the complexity of the interweaving of voices on the one hand and the almost abstract composure of the whole on the other.
Nobilissima visione was born as a danced legend in 1937, when Paul Hindemith decided to compose a ballet following the suggestion he felt in front of Giotto’s frescoes in the Bardi Chapel of the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence. A first full version of the ballet was staged in July 1938 in London, with the composer conducting, while an alternative, abridged version in the form of an orchestral suite was performed at the International Festival of Contemporary Music at Teatro La Fenice in Venice the following September. The ballet is inspired by St. Francis, a central figure in the Bardi Chapel frescoes. The Saint’s life is then recounted in eleven episodes, from his origins to his contrast with the malevolent forces represented in the March by the mercenaries, his encounter with the principles of Chastity, Poverty, and Obedience- allegorically represented by three ladies-and his marriage to madonna Poverty, to his praise of Creation, a reference to the Canticle of the Creatures. The music gathers varied influences, mainly of archaic taste. The usual refinement of timbre is combined with a diatonic musical writing aimed at making the expression of a serene and imperturbable spirituality the protagonist; Hindemith thus confirms a research focused on tonal polyphony, already established with Mathis der Maler a few years earlier. The most intense moment of great magnificence is reached in the last episode, Incipiunt laudes creaturarum, which sanctions the victory of the principles of faith and the grandeur of the saint’s work. The ballet was composed in close collaboration with dancer and choreographer Léonide Massine, who, having shared Hindemith’s emotion in front of the frescoes, wanted to recreate in the choreography, too, a gestural style akin to Renaissance figurative art.

Il Ricercare a sei voci fa parte della Musikalisches Opfer (l’Offerta musicale) di Johann Sebastian Bach. Nel 1747, il compositore era stato ospite di Federico II di Prussia, che gli aveva proposto un tema per un’improvvisazione, in seguito rielaborato come ciclo tripartito di undici canoni e fughe e dedicato al re. Tra i diversi brani della raccolta, il Ricercare a 6 voci raggiunge un livello di rara complessità, e non a torto è definito uno dei momenti più alti nella storia della polifonia. Tra il 1934 e il 1935 Anton Webern si adoperò in un’operazione di trascrizione per orchestra del Ricercare. La pagina bachiana si prestava alla strumentazione, infatti la scrittura contrappuntistica, sebbene più spesso affidata al cembalo, non limitava le possibili scelte di organico. Webern sfrutta la ricca trama della fuga distribuendo i motivi ai diversi timbri e registri dell’orchestra, con l’obiettivo di mantenere perfettamente lineare il discorso musicale, generare un effetto unitario ma sonoramente composito e, proprio attraverso la frammentazione delle linee tra gli strumenti, mettere ben in luce la «coesione motivica». Riferendosi all’Arte della fuga, Webern parlava di un lavoro che conduce «nella sfera dell’astratto più assoluto, una musica alla quale manca tutto ciò che generalmente si indica con le annotazioni: se sia un pezzo per voci o per strumenti, segni d’interpretazione, insomma non c’è assolutamente niente. È davvero quasi una astrazione, ma io vorrei meglio dire “la più alta realtà!” Tutte queste fughe sono costruite sulla base di un solo tema, che muta sempre: un grosso libro di idee musicali, il cui contenuto parte da una sola idea! Cosa significa tutto questo? Aspirazione alla più alta unitarietà. Tutto deriva da una entità, da quel solo tema di fuga! Tutta resta “in tema”». Questa considerazione si applica bene al lavoro fatto sull’Offerta musicale, la cui orchestrazione rende da una parte la complessità dell’intreccio delle voci e dall’altra la compostezza quasi astratta dell’insieme.
Nobilissima visione nasce come leggenda danzata nel 1937, quando Paul Hindemith decise di comporre un balletto in seguito alla suggestione provata di fronte agli affreschi di Giotto nella Cappella Bardi della Basilica di Santa Croce a Firenze. Una prima versione completa del balletto venne messa in scena nel luglio del 1938 a Londra, con la direzione del compositore, mentre una versione alternativa e sintetica in forma di suite orchestrale venne eseguita al Festival Internazionale di Musica Contemporanea del Teatro La Fenice di Venezia il settembre successivo. Il balletto si ispira a San Francesco, figura centrale negli affreschi della Cappella Bardi. Viene quindi raccontata in undici episodi la vita del Santo, dalle origini al contrasto con le forze malevole rappresentate nella Marcia dai mercenari, all’incontro con i principi di Castità, Povertà e Obbedienza – rappresentati allegoricamente da tre dame –, e il matrimonio con madonna Povertà, fino alla lode al Creato, riferimento al Cantico delle Creature. La musica raccoglie influenze varie, principalmente di gusto arcaicizzante. Alla consueta raffinatezza timbrica si unisce ad una scrittura musicale diatonica volta a rendere protagonista l’espressione di una spiritualità serena e imperturbabile; Hindemith conferma così una ricerca incentrata sulla polifonia tonale, già affermata con Mathis der Maler pochi anni prima. Il momento più intenso, di grande magnificenza, si raggiunge nell’ultimo episodio, Incipiunt laudes creaturarum, che sancisce la vittoria dei principi di fede e la grandiosità dell’operato del Santo. Il balletto venne composto in stretta collaborazione con il ballerino e coreografo Léonide Massine, che avendo avuto modo di condividere l’emozione di Hindemith di fronte agli affreschi volle ricreare anche nella coreografia una gestualità affine all’arte figurativa rinascimentale.
