Celebrate St Patrick’s Day steeped in the music of one of Ireland’s finest composers, Shaun Davey, with the world premiere of his new Cello Concerto and his timeless and epic contemporary classic, The Brendan Voyage.

Composed during the enforced isolation of lockdown, Davey’s long-held urge to write a concerto for cello and orchestra gained extra impetus with the realisation, he says, that ‘the purpose of the music I wanted to write was to express the experience of a lifetime. The music for the cello and orchestra would itself be a breathing, living thing with its own birth, lifespan, and death’.

The result is the Refuge, forged from an urgent impulse to write even within the extreme seclusion caused by the pandemic. It’s a major new work from a composer who elegantly infuses classical forms with influences drawn from Irish traditional music.

Young rising-star cellist Sinéad O'Halloran (former principal cellist with the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland and the European Union Youth Orchestra) continues her association with Davey’s music as soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by long-time Davey collaborator, David Brophy.

A ‘ground-breaking crossover work of great significance’ (Living Tradition), The Brendan Voyage is an atmospheric, powerfully moving musical drama vividly depicting St. Brendan’s heroic Sixth-century transatlantic crossing from Ireland to the New World in a tiny leather, currach-like boat.

Featuring uilleann piper Mark Redmond, it’s a lavish work of cinematic breadth – a bracing musical adventure into the unknown and a stirring statement of faith in the great perhaps of life and living.
