The founder of the operetta genre, a brilliant feuilletonist, "one of the greatest satirists in the history of music" (as I. Sollertinsky put it), the author of the same cancan - all this is Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880).

In his work there are operas, romances, and vocal ensembles, but most importantly - about a hundred different operettas. It was Offenbach who took the operetta genre to a new level, expanded its artistic range and brought a satirical context to it. Even the well-known mythological and historical plots of the composer are deformed and become a scathing parody of the cynical and depraved society of the contemporary Second Empire.

Offenbach began to write theatrical and entertaining music almost immediately after graduating from the Paris Conservatory, when he worked as a cellist at the Opéra-Comique and played in various entertainment venues.
And in 1855 he opened his own theater Bouffes-Parisiens, where until 1862 he was director, composer, director and conductor. It was here that the premiere of his operetta "Orpheus in Hell" with the famous infernal cancan took place.
