La figura di Giacomo Puccini è, senza ombra di dubbio, una delle più amate ed apprezzate
di tutto il panorama lirico. Questo concerto, proposto nel 150° anniversario dalla nascita,
vuole quindi manifestare un giusto tributo alla straordinarietà di questo compositore
offrendo una duplice occasione, per chi già conosce il grande musicista di riscoprire i
valori artistici e storici della sua produzione sia un’opportunità di assoluto valore per chi
voglia accostarsi alla sua musica.
Il concerto tocca tutti i massimi titoli del compositore. Dal primo capolavoro della matu-
rità, Manon Lescaut. La composizione di un’opera tratta dal celebre romanzo dell’abate
Antoine François Prévost fa ottenere al giovane Giacomo il suo primo autentico trionfo e
sancisce la nascita di un capolavoro. Non stupisce infatti che, fin dalla sua prima esecuzio-
ne, l’opera lo segnalò come una delle massime figure nel panorama musicale del momento
anche grazie alla direzione di straordinaria incisività proposta da un giovane e già talentuo-
sissimo Arturo Toscanini.
Seconda grande opera presente sarà La Bohème. Tratta dal romanzo Scènes de la vie de
bohème di Henri Murger questa vicenda ispira particolarmente la vena melodica dell’ope-
rista, ispirando così una delle sue creazione più amate. Il clima gaio e terribile riesce ad
essere evocato dalla musica con tanta incisiva comunicatività. L’abilità di Puccini è quella
di renderci immediatamente in contatto con le dinamiche sceniche e drammaturgiche,
aprendo la strada ad una empatia, fin ad allora inconcepibile. Questo aspetto, ancor più
che il numero altissimo di straordinarie melodie, diviene certamente una delle cause che
hanno reso immortale nell’immaginario collettivo la vicenda di Mimì e Rodolfo e quella
di Marcello e Musetta.
Seguirà poi Tosca. L’opera risente del clima verista e di quello wagneriano; entrambi
lasciano tracce evidenti in questo suo melodramma che diviene uno dei più meditati e
maggiormente legati all’espediente musicale e drammaturgico del Leitmotiv e della for-
tissima incisività drammatica. Altro appuntamento irrinunciabile è Madama Butterfly.
Opera che affonda le sue radici nel fascino che l’oriente desta, all’inizio del XX secolo
offre al musicista uno spunto esotico per dare vita ad un complesso di sentimenti profon-
dissimi e sconvolgenti. L’opera, al suo apparire, fu inspiegabilmente fischiata; oggi è con-
siderata come un autentico capolavoro dell’indagine psicologica del mondo femminile,
tanto caro e tanto sapientemente indagato dal grande toscano.
La vena pucciniana tocca poi ancora la dolcezza dei sentimenti nel mirabile cammeo di
Suor Angelica, dove devozione e passionalità sono profondamente fusi con un clima di
evanescente simbolismo. Il grande successo internazionale e soprattutto americano non
poteva non sollecitare la sensibilità del compositore che con coraggio sceglie di ambienta-
re la vicenda di un amore tormentato proprio nel leggendario west, tracciando con la sua
consumata abilità un figura ricchissima di sfaccettature come quella de La fanciulla del
West. La carriera di Puccini si chiude con il contatto con il mondo magico e simbolico di
Turandot. In questa opera è percettibile il contatto con la cultura d’oltralpe e soprattutto
mitteleuropea, che ne sostiene le scelte drammaturgiche e compositive. Il complesso di
questa nuova modalità compositiva colloca l’ultima sua composizione in una nicchia che
trascende il verismo, senza rinnegarne le sue caratteristiche; con essa spinge il vocalismo
tipicamente italiano fino alle soglie della dodecafonia e della scabra musicalità straussiana,
da leggere, come del resto tutta la vicenda, in un’ottica freudiana.

The figure of Giacomo Puccini is, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most loved and appreciated

 of the whole opera scene.  This concert, proposed on the 150th anniversary of his birth,

 he therefore wants to manifest a just tribute to the extraordinary nature of this composer

 offering a double opportunity for those who already know the great musician to rediscover the

 artistic and historical values ​​of his production is an opportunity of absolute value for whom

 want to get close to his music.

 The concert touches all the composer's greatest titles.  From the first masterpiece of the matu-

 rity, Manon Lescaut.  The composition of a work taken from the famous novel of the abbot

 Antoine François Prévost makes the young Giacomo obtain his first authentic triumph e

 marks the birth of a masterpiece.  In fact, it is not surprising that, since its first execution

 ne, the opera signaled him as one of the greatest figures in the musical panorama of the moment

 also thanks to the direction of extraordinary incisiveness proposed by a young and already talented-

 very well Arturo Toscanini.

 The second major present work will be La Bohème.  Based on the novel Scènes de la vie de

 bohème by Henri Murger this story particularly inspires the melodic vein of the opera-

 rista, thus inspiring one of his most beloved creations.  The gay and terrible climate succeeds

 be evoked by the music with such incisive communicativeness.  Puccini's skill is that

 to make us immediately in contact with the scenic and dramaturgical dynamics,

 opening the way to an empathy, hitherto inconceivable.  This aspect, even more

 that the very high number of extraordinary melodies certainly becomes one of the causes that

 they made the story of Mimì and Rodolfo and that immortal in the collective imagination

 by Marcello and Musetta.

 Tosca will then follow.  The work is influenced by the realist and Wagnerian climate;  both of them

 they leave evident traces in this melodrama of his which becomes one of the most meditated and

 more closely linked to the musical and dramaturgical device of the Leitmotiv and of the

 very dramatic incisiveness.  Another unmissable event is Madama Butterfly.

 Work that has its roots in the fascination that the East arouses at the beginning of the twentieth century

 offers the musician an exotic cue to give life to a complex of deep feelings

 dissimi and shocking.  The work, upon its appearance, was inexplicably whistled;  today it is

 considered as an authentic masterpiece of the psychological investigation of the female world,

 so dear and so wisely investigated by the great Tuscan.

 Puccini's vein then touches again the sweetness of feelings in the admirable cameo by

 Sister Angelica, where devotion and passion are deeply fused with an atmosphere of

 evanescent symbolism.  The great international and especially American success is not

 could not stimulate the sensitivity of the composer who courageously chooses to

 re the story of a tormented love right in the legendary west, tracing with his

 consummate skill a figure rich in facets like that of La fanciulla del

 West.  Puccini's career ends with the contact with the magical and symbolic world of

 Turandot.  In this work the contact with the culture of the Alps and above all is perceptible

 Central European, which supports his dramaturgical and compositional choices.  The complex of

 this new compositional modality places his latest composition in a niche that

 it transcends realism, without denying its characteristics;  with it it pushes vocalism

 typically Italian up to the threshold of dodecaphony and the rough Straussian musicality,

 to be read, as indeed the whole story, from a Freudian perspective.
