'What do you want to offer this harsh world?,' choreographer Alain Platel asked the dancers of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. 'Softness,' they replied. The result becomes Ombra, a unique collaboration between choir, orchestra and dancers of our house. Composer Steven Prengels develops an orchestral score in which he weaves well-known classical masterpieces by Handel, Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, among others, into new layers of meaning.

Choir members, dancers and orchestral musicians come together under the tree of visual artist Berlinde De Bruyckere. Together with singer and performer TK Russell and guest choreographers Mélanie Lomoff and Luis Marrafa, they created the performance Ombra.

‘Nooit was een schaduw van een boom zo heerlijk...’, klinkt het in Händels beroemde aria Ombra mai fu. Alain Platel en beeldend kunstenares Berlinde De Bruyckere laten zich inspireren door de schaduw van een boom als ontmoetingsplek, als een plaats waar overal ter wereld en doorheen de geschiedenis mensen samenkomen om uit te rusten, elkaar te treffen of problemen te bespreken. De Bruyckeres poëtische beeldenwereld lijkt een zielsverwant van Platels universum.

Na het overweldigende succes van C(H)ŒURS 2022 nodigt Platel opnieuw de koorleden, dansers en orkestmusici van Opera Ballet Vlaanderen uit tot een creatieve dialoog. Samen met zanger en performer TK Russell en gastchoreografen Mélanie Lomoff en Luis Marrafa creëren ze de voorstelling Ombra. Componist Steven Prengels ontwikkelt een nieuwe orkestpartituur waarin hij bekende klassieke meesterwerken van onder meer Händel, Bach, Mozart en Beethoven verweeft tot nieuwe betekenislagen.

‘Never was a shade of a tree so lovely...’, it says in Händel’s famous aria ‘Ombra mai fu’. Alain Platel and visual artist Berlinde De Bruyckere take inspiration from the shade of a tree as a meeting place, as a place where people all over the world and throughout history come together to rest, meet or discuss problems. De Bruyckere’s poetic world of images seems to share a kinship with Platel’s universe.

After the overwhelming success of C(H)OEURS 2022, Platel once again invites the chorus members, dancers and orchestral musicians of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen to join a creative dialogue. Together with singer and performer TK Russell and guest choreographers Mélanie Lomoff and Luis Marrafa, they create the performance Ombra.
