Le début du Concerto pour violoncelle de Dvorák, interprété lors de ce concert par Alisa Weilerstein, sonne comme une citation de la Quatrième Symphonie de Brahms. Emmanuel Krivine lui fait succéder la sombre Première, en ut mineur.

À la fin du XIXe siècle, le grand romantisme vit ses derniers feux : Chopin, Schumann, Mendelssohn et Berlioz sont morts. Deux grands nostalgiques chantent les splendeurs du passé : Brahms attendra 1876 pour composer sa Première Symphonie, posant ainsi la première pierre d’un édifice magistral, pensé dans le prolongement de la Neuvième Symphonie de Beethoven. Invité aux États-Unis, Dvorák se languit de sa Bohême natale et compose un Concerto pour violoncelle, son concerto le plus abouti et inspiré.
