OSR Festival I: Pulcinella Suite Stravinsky (+7 More)

Pour ce premier des trois concerts du Festival des Solistes au BFM, l’OSR invite à la danse, ou plutôt aux danses, où chacun et chacune trouvera son plaisir. C’est ainsi qu’on entendra la Sinfonia (Ouverture) et le Scherzino (troisième mouvement) du ballet Pulcinella d’Igor Stravinski (1882-1969). Créé par les Ballets Russes à l’Opéra de Paris, en 1920, sous la direction d’Ernest Ansermet, chef fondateur de l’OSR, c’est un mélange savamment dosé de musique de chambre baroque, menuets de cour et commedia dell’arte, où Stravinski bouscule constamment les points de repère rythmiques et harmoniques.

Artiste en résidence cette saison, le clarinettiste et chef Martin Fröst nous offre Nomadic Dances (que les mélomanes du Verbier Festival ont pu découvrir l’année dernière) ainsi que la Danse Klezmer No 2, deux pièces écrites par son propre frère Göran Fröst, mettant en valeur l’instrument et le talent polyvalent du clarinettiste suédois, mêlant allègrement des éléments sonores allant du baroque français à la musique de notre temps, en passant par des mélodies traditionnelles.

Les deux derniers mouvements du Concerto pour violon No 2 de Serge Prokofiev (1891-1953) montrent les deux faces du compositeur : son invention mélodique dans le magnifique chant, légèrement teinté de mélancolie, tissé par le soliste dans l’Andante assai (rappelant Roméo et Juliette, œuvre phare du compositeur russe), puis, dans l’Allegro ben marcato final, les accords dissonants, les attaques saccadées et les rythmes syncopés qui lui sont souvent associés.

Avant de clôturer en beauté ce concert avec l’époustouflant et bien nommé Hyper Exit du compositeur suédois Anders Hillborg (né en 1954), créé par Martin Fröst en 2015, on entendra encore le finale de la Quatrième Symphonie de Félix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Malgré son nom de saltarello, seul le début évoque cette danse bondissante. En réalité, cette page ressemble bien plus à une tarentelle : ainsi nommée, prétendait-on que le seul espoir pour la victime d’une morsure de tarentule résidait dans un mouvement des bras et des jambes sans arrêt. Alors dansons, dansons, car c’est bon pour la santé…

For this first festival concert, the OSR is inviting us to dance, or rather to dance, where everyone will find something to enjoy. The Sinfonia (Overture) and the Scherzino (third movement) from the ballet Pulcinella by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1969) will be performed. First performed by the Ballets Russes at the Paris Opéra in 1920 under the direction of Ernest Ansermet, founding conductor of the OSR, it is a skilful blend of baroque chamber music, court minuets and commedia dell'arte, in which Stravinsky constantly overturns rhythmic and harmonic reference points.

This season's artist-in-residence, clarinettist and conductor Martin Fröst, brings us Nomadic Dances (which Verbier Festival audiences were able to discover last year) and Klezmer Dance No. 2, two pieces written by his own brother Göran Fröst, showcasing the instrument and the versatile talent of the Swedish clarinettist, who blithely mixes sonic elements ranging from the French Baroque to contemporary music and traditional melodies.

The last two movements of the Violin Concerto No. 2 by Serge Prokofiev (1891-1953) show both sides of the composer: his melodic invention in the magnificent song, slightly tinged with melancholy, woven by the soloist in the Andante assai (reminiscent of Romeo and Juliette, the Russian composer's flagship work), then, in the final Allegro ben marcato, the dissonant chords, jerky attacks and syncopated rhythms that are often associated with it.

Before bringing the concert to a fitting close with the breathtaking and aptly named Hyper Exit by Swedish composer Anders Hillborg (b. 1954), premiered by Martin Fröst in 2015, we hear the finale of the Fourth Symphony by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Despite its name of saltarello, only the beginning evokes this bouncing dance. In reality, this page is much more like a tarantella: so named because it was claimed that the only hope for the victim of a tarantula bite lay in the non-stop movement of arms and legs. So let's dance, let's dance, because it's good for your health...
