On December 2, the St. Petersburg Theater of Musical Comedy presents the world premiere of the first Russian-American musical, which is dedicated to the life and work of the outstanding Russian emperor - Peter the Great. The production, conceived several years ago, is dedicated to the 350th anniversary of the birth of Peter I, which is celebrated in Russia in 2022.

Who was this brilliant reformer, what events and facts of his personal biography influenced his fateful decisions for the country - these and other questions are raised by the theater in its new work, addressing it to the widest range of viewers. 

The authors of the musical - one of the most famous American composers of the 21st century Frank Wildhorn and the famous Russian playwright Konstantin Rubinsky - tried to convey the scale of Peter's personality in their work. At the same time, they managed to show the complexity and inconsistency of the character of the Russian emperor, depriving him of any idealization and avoiding one-sidedness in assessing his activities, which often suffers from those few works about the life of Peter the Great that appeared on world musical stages in different years.

Not the Bronze Horseman, a monumental political figure burdened with numerous historical concepts, will appear on the stage of the St. Petersburg theater, but an earthly man, with his dreams and doubts, love and striving for the future. The authors trace the life path of Peter the Great from the age of 10, when he became king, to the founding of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, which became the capital of Russia for many years - St. Petersburg.

2 декабря Санкт-Петербургский театр музыкальной комедии представляет мировую премьеру первого русско-американского мюзикла, который посвящен жизни и деятельности выдающегося российского императора – Петра Великого. Постановка, задуманная несколько лет назад, приурочена к 350-летию со дня рождения Петра I, которое отмечается в России в 2022 году.

Каким был этот гениальный реформатор, какие события и факты личной биографии повлияли на его судьбоносные для страны решения – эти и другие вопросы поднимает театр в своем новом произведении, адресуя его самому широкому кругу зрителей. 

Авторы мюзикла – один из самых именитых американских композиторов XXI века Фрэнк Уайлдхорн и известный российский драматург Константин Рубинский – постарались передать в своем сочинении масштаб личности Петра. При этом им удалось показать сложность и противоречивость характера русского императора, лишив его фигуру всякой идеализации и избегая однобокости в оценках его деятельности, чем зачастую страдают те немногие произведения о жизни Петра Первого, которые в разные годы появлялись на мировых музыкальных подмостках.

На сцену петербургского театра выйдет не «медный всадник» – монументальная и обремененная многочисленными историческими концепциями политическая фигура, а земной человек, с его мечтами и сомнениями, любовью и устремленностью в будущее. Жизненный путь Петра Первого авторы прослеживают от 10-летнего возраста, когда он стал царем, и до основания одного из самых прекрасных городов мира, на много лет ставшего столицей России – Санкт-Петербурга.
