Dopo aver vinto il Premio della Critica al Concorso Tchaikovsky di Mosca nel 1990, Pietro De Maria ha ricevuto il Primo Premio al Concorso Internazionale Dino Ciani di Milano (1990), al Géza Anda di Zurigo (1994). Nel 1997 gli è stato assegnato il Premio Mendelssohn ad Amburgo.
La sua intensa attività concertistica lo vede solista con prestigiose orchestre e con direttori quali Roberto Abbado, Gary Bertini, Myung-Whun Chung, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Daniele Gatti, Alan Gilbert, Eliahu Inbal, Marek Janowski, Ton Koopman, Michele Mariotti, Ingo Metzmacher, Gianandrea Noseda, Corrado Rovaris, Yutaka Sado, Sándor Végh, Stanislav Kochanovsky.
Nato a Venezia nel 1967, De Maria ha iniziato lo studio del pianoforte con Giorgio Vianello e si è diplomato sotto la guida di Gino Gorini al Conservatorio della sua città, perfezionandosi successivamente con Maria Tipo al Conservatorio di Ginevra, dove ha conseguito nel 1988 il Premier Prix de Virtuosité con distinzione.
Il suo repertorio spazia da Bach a Ligeti ed è il primo pianista italiano ad aver eseguito pubblicamente l’integrale delle opere di Chopin in sei concerti. Recentemente ha realizzato un progetto bachiano, eseguendo i due libri del Clavicembalo ben temperato e le Variazioni Goldberg.
Ha registrato l’integrale delle opere di Chopin, il Clavicembalo ben temperato e le Variazioni Goldberg per DECCA, ricevendo importanti riconoscimenti dalla critica specializzata, tra cui Diapason, International Piano, MusicWeb-International e Pianiste.
