Fedora, sister of Tosca? Like Puccini, Umberto Giordano was inspired by a flamboyant heroine of the theatre stage tailor- made by Victorien Sardou for the great Sarah Bernhardt.

These two twinned works also share the same explosive combination of tragic love against a backdrop of totalitarian power. In Saint Petersburg in 1881, Vladimir, fiancé of Princess Fedora Romanova, is assassinated by Loris Ipanov, a suspected anarchist. Drunk with revenge, Fedora pursues the murderer to Paris and denounces him to the imperial police. But Loris reveals to her that his wife was Vladimir’s mistress: victims of a common betrayal, he and Fedora fall in love.

Taking refuge in Gstaad, the couple learns that Ipanov’s relatives back in Russia are suffering reprisals following Fedora’s denunciation. In a final sacrificial gesture, she poisons herself and dies in her lover’s arms. Suspense, passion, twists and turns… This true operatic thriller has been a triumph ever since its 1898 premiere in Milan. In it, Umberto Giordano brings together all Italian art’s most ardent lyricism, whose verismo is adorned with an opulent orchestra.

With scenographer Johannes Leiacker, director Arnaud Bernard retains the plot’s luxurious decorum, from the Petersburg palace to Parisian gold, to the gleaming chic of a hotel lobby inspired by the famous Gstaad Palace. But he also accuses the excessive splendour, juxtaposing it with dark perspectives that reveal the underlying drama. For Fedora Romanova’s Russia is no longer that of the tsars, but of a post- glastnost era, where the secret services know how to use compromise to ruin the reputation of their victims. In 1881, the year of the assassination of Alexander II, Loris Ipanov was seen as a possible anarchist. A century later, under the merciless eye of spy cameras, surveillance has increased, and executive sanction takes a more technological and chilling turn.

From Enrico Caruso to José Carreras, including Plácido Domingo and Mirella Freni, Fedora has often constituted an exceptional showcase for the greatest opera singers. This production will mark the debut of Roberto Alagna and his wife Aleksandra Kurzak in an operatic work at the Grand Théâtre. Alternating with them, Fedora and Loris will be played by two of today’s great Russian voices, Elena Guseva and Najmiddin Mavlyanov. Returning to Place de Neuve after Turandot (2022) and Nabucco (2023), Antonino Fogliani will deliver a fresh lesson in Italianità at the head of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.

Ces deux œuvres jumelles partagent aussi le même mélange détonant d’amours tragiques sur fond de pouvoir totalitaire. À Saint-Pétersbourg en 1881, Vladimir, fiancé de la princesse Fedora Romanova, est assassiné par Loris Ipanov, anarchiste présumé. Ivre de vengeance, Fedora poursuit le meurtrier à Paris et le dénonce à la police impériale. Mais Loris lui révèle que sa femme était la maîtresse de Vladimir : victimes d’une commune trahison, voilà Fedora et lui amoureux. Réfugiés à Gstaad, le couple apprend que les proches d’Ipanov en Russie subissent des représailles suite à la dénonciation de Fedora. Dans un ultime geste sacrificiel, celle-ci s’empoisonne et meurt dans les bras de son amant.

Suspense, passion, rebondissements… dès sa création à Milan en 1898, ce véritable thriller opératique est un triomphe. Umberto Giordano y réunit tout l’art italien du lyrisme le plus ardent, dont le vérisme se pare d’un orchestre opulent.

Avec le scénographe Johannes Leiacker, le metteur en scène Arnaud Bernard conserve à l’intrigue son décorum luxueux, du palais pétersbourgeois aux ors parisiens, jusqu’au chic rutilant d’un hall d’hôtel inspiré du célèbre Gstaad Palace Mais il en accuse également le faste abusif, y juxtaposant des perspectives d’ombre qui révèlent le drame sous-jacent. Car la Russie de Fedora Romanova n’est plus ici celle des tsars, mais celle d’une ère post-glastnost, où les services secrets savent user du compromat pour ruiner la réputation de leurs victimes. En 1881, année de l’assassinat d’Alexandre II, Loris Ipanov était vu comme un possible anarchiste. Un siècle plus tard, sous l’œil impitoyable des caméras espionnes, la surveillance s’est accentuée et la sanction du pouvoir prend un tour plus technologique et glaçant.

D’Enrico Caruso à José Carreras, en passant par Placido Domingo face à Mirella Freni, Fedora a souvent constitué un écrin d’exception pour les plus grands chanteurs lyriques. Cette production marquera les débuts de Roberto Alagna et de son épouse Aleksandra Kurzak dans une œuvre lyrique au Grand Théâtre. En alternance, Fedora et Loris seront incarnés par un couple de grandes voix russes du moment, Elena Guseva et Najmiddin Mavlyanov. De retour place de Neuve après Turandot (2022) et Nabucco (2023), Antonino Fogliani délivrera une nouvelle leçon d’italianità à la tête de l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande.
