Реквием (1874) – единственное произведение Верди, пользующееся такой же широкой популярностью, как и его оперы, а также одно из двух сочинений композитора, созданное не в оперном жанре (второе – Четыре духовных пьесы, последний опус Верди, оконченный в 1898 году). Наряду с психологической глубиной и эмоциональным музыкальным языком, Реквиему присущи театральная образность и красочность, сближающие это произведение с лучшими поздними операми композитора.

Скорбь по умершему, гнев, вызванный безжалостным вторжением смерти в жизнь великого человека, любовь и нежность к нему, радость земного существования – эти чувства Верди воплотил искренне, просто и человечно. Реквием несет в себе большое количество черт, характерных именно для опер Верди. С точки зрения слушателя, Реквием представляется драмой ничуть не меньшей, чем, скажем, те драмы, которые развертываются в «Аиде» или «Дон Карлосе». И в операх, и в Реквиеме самое важное для Верди — сила и красота человеческого духа. Именно яркость и напряженность эмоций делают Реквием Верди одним из наиболее любимых произведений слушателей всего мира.

Этот монументальный 7-частный цикл для четырех солистов, смешанного хора и оркестра был написан в 1871 году. После смерти одного из величайших итальянских композиторов Джакомо Россини в 1868 году, Верди выступил с предложением, адресованным итальянским композиторам: совместно написать Реквием в память об ушедшем великом коллеге. Все части были написаны, однако исполнение Реквиема так и не состоялось. Через некоторое время Верди принял решение закончить произведение в одиночку. К этому его подтолкнула смерть одного из видных деятелей итальянского национально-освободительного движения, писателя Алессандро Манцони. The Requiem (1874) is the only work by Verdi that enjoys the same wide popularity as his operas, as well as one of two works by the composer that were not created in the operatic genre (the other is Four Sacred Pieces, Verdi's last opus, completed in 1898). Along with psychological depth and emotional musical language, the Requiem is characterized by theatrical imagery and brilliance, bringing this work closer to the composer's best late operas.

Sorrow for the deceased, anger caused by the ruthless invasion of death into the life of a great man, love and tenderness for him, the joy of earthly existence - Verdi embodied these feelings sincerely, simply and humanely. The Requiem bears a large number of features characteristic of Verdi's operas. From the listener's point of view, the Requiem seems to be no less a drama than, say, those dramas that unfold in "Aida" or "Don Carlos". Both in operas and in the Requiem, the most important thing for Verdi is the strength and beauty of the human spirit. It is the brightness and intensity of emotions that make Verdi's Requiem one of the most beloved works of listeners all over the world.

This monumental 7-movement cycle for four soloists, mixed choir and orchestra was written in 1871. After the death of one of the greatest Italian composers Giacomo Rossini in 1868, Verdi made a proposal addressed to Italian composers: to jointly write a Requiem in memory of the departed great colleague. All parts were written, but the performance of the Requiem never took place. After some time, Verdi decided to finish the work alone. This was prompted by the death of one of the prominent figures of the Italian national liberation movement, the writer Alessandro Manzoni. Verdi's Requiem was first performed on May 22, 1874 in the church of St. Mark under the direction of the author. Within a few days, the Requiem was repeated with great success at La Scala, and then in Paris, Vienna, St. Petersburg and other cities.
