Even before the Broadway premiere in 1996, RENT is being celebrated as the resurrection of the American musical. Instead of singing cats and roller-skating trains, authentic young people with real problems stand on the stage. The composer and author Jonathan Larson has based himself on the plot of Puccini's LA BOHÈME, but relocated it to New York's East Village in the 1990s: His Bohèmiens are performers, rock musicians, struggling for success and money for the rent due.
