Guiseppe Verdi wrote his three-act opera at the age of 38, and with this masterpiece based on Victor Hugo's former scandalous play (The King's Fun), he established his world fame in one fell swoop. After its premiere in Venice in 1851, the work became one of the most performed operas in the world. Rigoletto takes place in Italy in the mid-1500s. The direction of Péter Forgács takes the story to the 1930s. Its title character is the sharp-witted friend of the Duke of Mantua, who raises his daughter, the beautiful Gilda, secluded from the world. He is very afraid of her and wants to protect her at all costs from the rich, dangerous world of the prince's company, and above all from the charming, womanizing prince, who nevertheless seduces Gilda. When all this comes to Rigoletto's attention, the angry father seeks revenge. He hires Sparafucile, a cold-blooded assassin, to kill the prince,

Guiseppe Verdi 38 évesen írta meg háromfelvonásos operáját, és ezzel a Victor Hugo egykori botrányos színdarabja (A király mulat) alapján született remekművével egycsapásra megalapozta világhírét. Az 1851-es velencei bemutatót követően a mű a világ egyik legtöbbet játszott operája lett. A Rigoletto Itáliában játszódik az 1500-as évek derekán. Forgács Péter rendezése az 1930-as évekbe emeli a történetet. Címszereplője a mantovai herceg éles eszű barátja, aki lányát, a szépséges Gildát a világtól elzártan neveli. Nagyon félti, és mindenáron meg akarja védeni a herceg társaságának ármányokkal teli, veszélyes világától, azon belül pedig mindenekelőtt a sármos, nőfaló hercegtől, aki azonban így is elcsábítja Gildát. Amikor mindez Rigoletto tudomására jut, a dühödt apa bosszút forral. Felfogadja Sparafucilét, a hidegvérű bérgyilkost a herceg megölésére, hiszen most már a család becsületének megmentése a tét...
