Un chef d’oeuvre baroque qui s’amuse avec le spectaculaire : le chef Damien Guillon et la metteuse en scène Claire Dancoisne s’emparent de l’opéra « à machines » et à rêves de Haendel. Dragons, volcans et monstres s’y succèdent sur fond de guerre, de magie et d’amour.

Premier opéra offert par un jeune compositeur au public londonien en 1711, Rinaldo s’inspire du poème La Jérusalem délivrée, sur lequel Haendel tisse une musique onirique et puissante. Nous sommes au temps de la première croisade : Goffredo (Godefroy de Bouillon) et son général Rinaldo vont conquérir Jérusalem, gouvernée par Argante. Ce dernier tente de vaincre Rinaldo avec le concours de son amante, la magicienne Armide. Pour attirer le chevalier Rinaldo dans son royaume, Armide enlève Alminera, sa promise…
Sur ce canevas empreint de souffle épique, d’exotisme et de sorcellerie, Claire Dancoisne donne vie aux dragons cracheurs de feu et aux furies. La directrice du Théâtre de La Licorne renoue avec l’esprit initial de l’opéra, riche de machineries et de magie. Après Bertrand Cuiller à Quimper en 2018, c’est au tour du chanteur et chef d’orchestre Damien Guillon de s’installer dans la fosse pour diriger les vingt musiciens du Banquet céleste. Théorbes, flûtes, basson : les instruments anciens accompagnent de formidables chanteurs. Après le triomphe de la première tournée, le Théâtre de Cornouaille s’associe à L’Opéra de Rennes et à la Co[opéra]tive pour reprendre cet opéra haut en couleurs musicales.

A baroque masterpiece that plays with the spectacular: the conductor Damien Guillon and the director Claire Dancoisne take over Handel's opera “with machines” and dreams. Dragons, volcanoes and monsters follow one another against a backdrop of war, magic and love.

The first opera offered by a young composer to the London public in 1711, Rinaldo is inspired by the poem Jerusalem Delivered , on which Handel weaves dreamlike and powerful music. We are at the time of the first crusade: Goffredo (Godefroy de Bouillon) and his general Rinaldo are going to conquer Jerusalem, governed by Argante. The latter tries to defeat Rinaldo with the help of his lover, the magician Armide. To attract the knight Rinaldo to his kingdom, Armide kidnaps Alminera, his betrothed...
On this canvas imbued with epic inspiration, exoticism and sorcery, Claire Dancoisne brings fire-breathing dragons and furies to life. The director of the Théâtre de La Licorne revives the original spirit of opera, rich in machinery and magic. After Bertrand Cuiller in Quimper in 2018, it is the turn of singer and conductor Damien Guillon to settle in the pit to lead the twenty musicians of the Celestial Banquet. Theorbos, flutes, bassoon: ancient instruments accompany great singers. After the triumph of the first tour, the Théâtre de Cornouaille joins forces with the Opéra de Rennes and the Co[opéra]tive to revive this highly musical opera.
