Slave Romance , is the third and last zarzuela composed by Carlos Vieco. The work was premiered on August 12, 1947 at the disappeared Teatro Junín in Medellín. In 1958 a second version was presented in the same theater, with some new musical numbers. Of the original libretto by Arturo Sanín Restrepo, there is only one version dated 1953.

This work was considered lost until in 2017, the researcher Ronald Perilla found the scores that survived. Since then he has dedicated his musicological research to this zarzuela for the sake of the complete reconstruction of a score for voice and piano. Their work has given rise to the re-release of the musical parts at the Mario Laserna Auditorium of the Universidad de los Andes in 2018. In 2019 the project won the “Music with Colombian Tempo” award from the Colombian Ministry of Culture, presenting a concert at the Germán Arciniegas Auditorium of the National Library of Colombia.


Slave Romance has its action in the 1810s, with the historical framework of the independence process that would lead the Viceroyalty of New Granada to become Colombia, and narrates the love story between Pedro Alonso, a liberto (a freed slave), and Solina de Valencia, a descendant of one of the noble families of Santa Fe de Antioquia.

Figueroa's stage proposal takes us to a music recording studio in the year 1952. Vieco's zarzuela will be the microcosm where soloists and choir must coexist despite their ideological and political differences intensified at the time. The voice of the radio announcer synthesizes and maintains the essence of Sanín's libretto.

General and musical direction

Violinist and master's degree in music from the Universidad de los Andes, where he finished his studies as an undergraduate and master's scholarship holder. As a researcher, he has been a speaker at the XVIII and XIX Colombian Congresses of History, and at the I st Colloquium Our Experience in Music: Interdisciplinary Dialogues , organized by the University of Chile. In addition to talks for the Teatro Colón in Bogotá and other institutions in the country.

He has worked as an assistant to stage directors Federico Figueroa, Pedro Salazar and Hyalmar Mitrotti. He has taken stage manager workshops with Beth Krynicki and Laia Machado. He has worked in operatic productions at the opera workshops of the Universidad de los Andes, the Universidad del Norte and the Universidad de Caldas.

He is currently finishing musicological research and a critical edition of Romanceslave , a zarzuela by Carlos Vieco. He was recently accepted as a speaker at the XIV Congress of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music – Latin American Branch (iaspm-la) and began another investigation on Colombian opera and zarzuela composed in the first half of the 20th century.
