Lyrical fairy tale in three acts by Antonín Dvořák / libretto by Jaroslav Kvapil / In Czech with German surtitles
The grand opening premiere of the 2018/19 season tells of the impossible love of a mermaid for a handsome prince. The expressive masterpiece has not been shown in Klagenfurt for 65 years. The new chief conductor Nicholas Carter will be in charge of the musical direction, Eva-Maria Höckmayr will be the director, and the South African soprano Pumeza Matshikiza will sing the title role. Rusalka longs for a different life. She wants to know what it's like to be human and ends up having to pay dearly for it. The fabric goes back to a medieval French legend. The template was artistically edited countless times in the 19th century and is not least due to the Walt Disney film Ariel, the mermaidpresent to this day. In 1900, the year Sigmund Freud's Interpretation of Dreams was published , the Czech composer Antonín Dvořák created the opera Rusalka , a work in which the turmoil of the dawning century cast its shadow. Rusalka's fairytale world forms the facade behind which the unquenchable longing and tragic loneliness of modern man open up.
