The somewhat sterile setting of Petr Weigl's staging at the Deutsche Oper Berlin is more than made up for by the impressive character portraits: Simon Estes as the great prophet, Horst Hiestermann as an hysterical, searing Herod, and the late Leonie Rysanek as an impressive Herodias. At the center of it all is Catherine Malfitano's Salome. She gives it her all (letting all the veils drop), making the psychological portrait of the young woman all too horrifyingly plausible. Sinopoli strikes a luxurious orchestral tone.
