Schubert was the only top composer to write for the arpeggione, a disused 19th-century cross between guitar and cello. His Arpeggione sonata is a favorite piece of cellists and the public. Two other favorites, Franck's Sonata and Schumann's Adagio en allegro , complete this program that will make every cello lover rejoice.

Austrian-born Kian Soltani comes from a family of Persian musicians. This biographical background is reflected in his choice of Reza Vali's Persian Folk Songs . Just as Bartók drew on folk music from the Balkans, the American/Iranian Vali composes with age-old Persian music as inspiration. With the title of his pieces, Schumann does not literally refer to folk music, but rather to his desire to tell intense, impressive stories.
