John Tavener’s visionary music has spoken directly and emotionally to audiences since the 1960s – never more so than when his Song for Athene was heard at the funeral of Princess Diana. Following his death in November 2013 (whilst this year’s Festival programme was being finalised) John Rutter described him as a composer “touched by genius at every point” who “could bring an audience to a deep silence which is a very rare gift”.
