Centraal in dit concert staat de wereldcreatie van de Eerste symfonie van de Brusselse pianist en componist Jean-Luc Fafchamps. Een naam die intussen bekend in de oren klinkt: Fafchamps is niet alleen stichtend lid van het Brusselse ensemble voor hedendaagse muziek Ictus, maar componeerde in 2010 ook het verplichte werk voor de Koningin Elisabethwedstrijd en werkt momenteel in opdracht van de Munt aan de triptiek Is this the End? De symfonie die Fafchamps op vraag van het Belgian National Orchestra schreef, draagt als titel “Ombres Célestes” en put inspiratie uit ruimtefenomenen als zwarte gaten, sterrenstelsels en de interstellaire leegte.

Ook Hollywood laat zich met de regelmaat van de klok door het heelal inspireren. Aankomend chef-dirigent Antony Hermus dirigeert naast Fafchamps’ nieuwe symfonie in dit concert ook muziek uit twee vroege sciencefictionfilms. Eerst weerklinkt een fragment uit de soundtrack die Jerry Goldsmith componeerde voor Planet of the Apes, een succesfilm uit 1968. Daarna brengt het orkest muziek van John Williams, gecomponeerd voor Steven Spielbergs kaskraker Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).

Deze buitenaardse avonturen worden aangevuld met een compositie die wereldberoemd werd toen Stanley Kubrick ze gebruikt als soundtrack voor zijn film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Richard Strauss liet zich bij het schrijven van Also sprach Zarathustra – waarvan Kubrick het openingsdeel gebruikte – echter niet inspireren door ruimtereizen, maar wel door de filosofie van Friedrich Nietzsche. “Symfonisch optimisme in fin-de-sièclevorm,” zo luidde de oorspronkelijke ondertitel van Strauss’ meest bekende symfonische gedicht.

Central to this concert is the world creation of the First Symphony by the Brussels pianist and composer Jean-Luc Fafchamps. A name that now sounds familiar: Fafchamps is not only a founding member of the Brussels ensemble for contemporary music Ictus, but also composed the compulsory work for the Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2010 and is currently working on the triptych Is dit the End? The symphony that Fafchamps wrote at the request of the Belgian National Orchestra is entitled “Ombres Célestes” and draws inspiration from space phenomena such as black holes, galaxies and the interstellar void.

Hollywood is also regularly inspired by the universe. In addition to Fafchamps' new symphony, upcoming chief conductor Antony Hermus will also conduct music from two early science fiction films in this concert. First, an excerpt from the soundtrack composed by Jerry Goldsmith for Planet of the Apes, a successful film from 1968, is played. Then the orchestra performs music by John Williams, composed for Steven Spielberg's blockbuster Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).

These otherworldly adventures are complemented by a composition that became world famous when Stanley Kubrick used them as the soundtrack for his film 2001: A Space Odyssey. When writing Also sprach Zarathustra – of which Kubrick used the opening movement – ​​Richard Strauss was not inspired by space travel, but by the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche. “Symphonic optimism in fin-de-siècle form,” was the original subtitle of Strauss' most famous symphonic poem.
