The orchestra is delighted to welcome Tugan Sokhiev back to the podium after a long absence. Under his direction, the Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund, one of the leading interpreters of Wagner and Strauss of our time, makes her debut with the Munich Philharmonic. The »Four Last Songs«, which Richard Strauss composed at the age of 84, speak of a mood of farewell and the awareness that everything in this world is finite. The author Karl Schumann called the song cycle a "requiem for oneself" and is very apt. A bitter reckoning with the Stalin era is Shostakovich's 10th symphony, written shortly after Stalin's death. Despite sadness, anger and pain, Shostakovich demonstrates a new artistic self-confidence and dares to look to the future with cautious optimism.
