SCHILDERIJENTENTOONSTELLING  

Eerste gastdirigent Roberto González-Monjas begon zijn carrière als soloviolist, concertmeester en kamermuzikant. Ook vandaag is hij, naast als dirigent, nog als violist actief. Soms speelt én dirigeert hij tegelijkertijd, zoals in zijn ophefmakende opname van Mozarts Zevende serenade met Musikkollegium Winterthur. In dit concert brengt hij – als violist én muzikaal leider – het Vierde vioolconcerto van Mozart, een werk dat de Oostenrijkse componist in 1776 schreef toen hij in dienst was van de Salzburgse aartsbisschoppen.

De Schilderijententoonstelling is Mussorgsky’s beroemdste werk. Aanleiding voor het schrijven van deze pianocyclus was een tentoonstelling met werk van de Russische schilder en architect Viktor Hartmann, een goede vriend van Mussorgsky die plotseling was overleden. Tien schetsen dienden Mussorgsky als inspiratiebron voor evenveel composities. Deze reeg hij aan elkaar met ‘promenades’: korte composities die verklanken hoe de componist van het ene werk naar het andere wandelt. Een kreupele gnoom opent de tentoonstelling, waarna een fantasievolle reis begint langsheen ruziënde kinderen in de Tuin van de Tuilerieën, een ballet van half uitgekomen kuikens, duistere catacomben en Baba Yaga’s hut op kippenpoten. De tentoonstelling eindigt met De grote poort van Kiev, een virtuoos showstuk voor pianisten dat Maurice Ravel (wiens orkestratie van de Schilderijententoonstelling in dit concert wordt uitgevoerd) op briljante wijze arrangeerde. Bijzonder aan het arrangement van Ravel is daarnaast ook het gebruik van saxofoons, onder andere voor de verklanking van het tweede schilderij: Il vecchio castello.

TABLEAUX D'UNE EXPOSITION   

Le premier chef invité Roberto González-Monjas a débuté sa carrière comme violoniste soliste, premier violon et musicien de chambre. Même s’il s’est réorienté vers la direction d’orchestre, il poursuit parallèlement une carrière de violoniste. Il lui arrive même de jouer et de diriger en même temps, comme pour le formidable enregistrement de la Sérénade n° 7 de Mozart avec le Musikkollegium Winterthur. Ce soir, il interprète et dirige le Belgian National Orchestra dans le Concerto pour violon n°4 de Mozart, une oeuvre que le compositeur autrichien a écrite en 1776 alors qu’il était au service des princes-évêques de Salzbourg.

Tableaux d’une exposition est l’oeuvre la plus célèbre de Moussorgski. C’est après avoir vu une rétrospective d’oeuvres du peintre et architecte russe Viktor Hartmann, un ami proche décédé inopinément, que Moussorgski eut l’idée de composer ce cycle pour piano. Dix esquisses du peintre ont servi d’inspiration aux dix tableaux musicaux de Moussorgski. Ces tableaux seront reliés entre eux par des « promenades », de brèves compositions qui symbolisent le parcours du visiteur d’une oeuvre à l’autre. Un gnome aux jambes tordues ouvre l’exposition, qui se poursuit dans un voyage plein de fantaisie qui fait entendre les cris d’enfants se chamaillant dans le Jardin des Tuileries, un ballet de poussins encore dans leur coquille, la pénombre des catacombes et l’isba de Baba Yaga perchée sur des pattes de poulet. L’exposition s’achève sur le tableau de La Grande Porte de Kiev, un morceau de bravoure virtuose pour pianistes brillamment arrangé par Maurice Ravel (dont l’orchestration des Tableaux d’une exposition est présentée ce soir). L’arrangement de Ravel se distingue également par l’utilisation des saxophones, qui illustrent notamment le deuxième tableau : Il vecchio castello.

PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION 

Our first guest conductor Roberto González-Monjas began his career as a violin soloist, concertmaster and chamber musician. Today, in addition to being a conductor, he is still active as a violinist. Sometimes he plays and conducts at the same time, as in his sensational recording of Mozart’s Seventh Serenade with the Musikkollegium Winterthur. In this concert, he performs - as violinist and musical director - Mozart’s Fourth Violin Concerto, a work the Austrian composer wrote in 1776 while in the service of the archbishops of Salzburg.

Pictures at an Exhibition is Mussorgsky’s most famous work. The reason for writing this piano cycle was an exhibition of works by the Russian painter and architect Viktor Hartmann, a close friend of Mussorgsky who had died suddenly. Ten sketches served as the inspiration for as many compositions. He linked them with “promenades”: short compositions that depict the way the composer moves from one work to another. A gnome opens the show, after which begins an imaginative journey through children squabbling in the Tuileries Garden, a ballet of half-hatched chicks, dark catacombs and Baba Yaga’s hut on chicken legs. The show ends with The Great Gate of Kiev, a virtuoso masterpiece for pianists brilliantly arranged by Maurice Ravel (whose orchestration of Pictures at an Exhibition is played in this concert). Another special feature of Ravel’s arrangement is the use of saxophones, especially for the setting of the second picture: Il vecchio castello.
