It is, according to the Guinness Book of Records, the "biggest" symphony in the standard repertoire — six movements, the clearest illustration of Gustav Mahler's dictum that "A symphony must be like the world — it must contain everything."

To celebrate the twelfth season of Siam Sinfonietta, and the return of Thailand to the world of live concerts, the renowned youth orchestra is tackling this monster of a work along with mezzo soprano Tamara Gura, the Gustav's Angels Choir and maestro Somtow Sucharitkul, who was the first conductor to present this work in Thailand in 2009.

December 5, 2021 will be the first performance of Mahler's Third Symphony in the region by a youth orchestra. But the Siam Sinfonietta is no stranger to Mahler, having also done Nos. 1, 4, 5, 6 and 9 in the past under the baton of Somtow, one of the region's Mahler lobbyists. French conductor Frederic Chaslin, hearing Somtow's performance of the Fourth in 2004, said, "I didn't think a non-Jewish conductor could understand Mahler so perfectly." 

Somtow completed the Mahler cycle in Thailand in 2015 and is now revisiting the entire cycle, this time with young people as performers.
