Symphony No. 3 in F major has become the most popular of Brahms' symphonies because of its maturity and sophistication. The composer completed it in Wiesbaden, where the fifty-year-old stayed in the summer of 1883. He may have fallen in love with the much younger singer Hermine Spiess, who lived in that town. Like most of Brahms' symphonies, the Third is determined by a melodic motto. In this case it consists of three notes which not only introduce the symphony but are often woven into its structure, resuming with dramatic emphasis at crucial moments in the later movements.
This concert was recorded in 1973 in the Great Concert Hall of Jerusalem with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
