Wagner began composing his opera 'Tristan and Isolde' in 1857, inspired by his forbidden love for Mathilde Wesendonck. Debussy's 1905 work 'La Mer' is an impressionistic masterpiece. Jonathan Harvey's 'Tranquil Abiding' is inspired by Buddhism and engages the entire orchestra in a contemplative inhaling and exhaling. Thomas Hampson will perform seven songs by Alban Berg, which he composed around 1907 when he was in his early twenties.
