Around 500 BC, Rome suffered under Etruscan rule. While the men are obliged to do military service and camp outside the city, the women lose themselves at home. Only Lucretia, married to General Collatinus, is considered virtuous and chaste and thus becomes an object of desire. The Etruscan prince Tarquinius gains access to her bedchamber and rapes her. Lucretia chooses suicide, triggering the Roman uprising.

Britten's 1946 composition is based on the tradition of Henry Purcell and does not dispense with tonality or melody. One narrator and one narrator, representing the choir, comment on the events from a Christian point of view, similar to Bach's evangelists. The baroque painting by Artemisia Gentileschi that captures the scene of the rape and characterizes the motif of the stage design also hangs in the New Palace.
