A young woman goes to the Bly estate to look after the upbringing of two orphaned siblings. The children's uncle and guardian hired her as a governess on the condition that she should take full responsibility for the children and not bother him with letters and questions. In Bly, the new governess tries to do an excellent job. One day an unknown man appears outside the window, who immediately disappears again. Frightened and agitated, the governess asks the housekeeper, Mrs. Grose, for the name of the stranger. Mrs. Grose thinks she recognizes the former servant Peter Quint from the description. Astonished, she adds that Quint has long since died... The more the governess tries to explore the secrets of the house, the more enigmatic and alien her surroundings appear to her. The plot of the opera remains highly ambivalent until the end: are the children as innocent as they seem? Is the governess the only one who notices strange phenomena? She believes that two evil spirits - Quint and former governess Miss Jessel, who died under mysterious circumstances - are threatening the children. But isn't she threatening the children with her own obsession with the ghosts? Do these ghosts really exist, or are they projections that stem from the governess' repressed instincts and fears? Or are they perhaps the means through which the children process their traumatic experiences? Are the children as innocent as they seem? Is the governess the only one who notices strange phenomena?
