About the work

Thérèse is married to Camille Raquin, her ailing cousin with whom she grew up. Her father had simply given her to his aunt after her own mother's death. From an early age she was used to look after the weak boy, and marrying him was a logical consequence - she is more of a nurse than a wife. Both lives continue to be determined by Madame Raquin, who is always concerned about her son. Camille is now strong enough to work in an office with his childhood friend Laurent. Unlike Camille, Laurent is dissatisfied with office work; he wants to become a great painter. That's why he broke with his father and is constantly financially tight. He is currently painting a portrait of Camille and is often with the Raquins. Thérèse pretends that she does not like his presence, but in truth she has an obsessive sexual relationship with the vital would-be artist. On the evening he finishes the portrait, he wants to part with Thérèse because he has no more time for secret meetings because he has to earn money. Thérèse desperate. A few days later, Thérèse, Laurent and Camille go on a trip to the Seine. Spontaneously, Thérèse and Laurent had the idea that they had to get rid of Camille in order to be openly happy together - with the help of the small fortune that Camille had to bequeath. They go out on the river in a boat and Laurent drowns Camille. Eleven months later, Thérèse and Laurent finally get married. The longed-for happiness does not materialize, however, on the wedding night Thérèse Laurent can no longer love, she has long since been eaten away by remorse. Madame Raquin now suspects that Camille did not accidentally drown. She accidentally overhears the guilty couple while they are talking of the crime and suffer a stroke in shock. Paralyzed, she survives as a warning reminder of the murder, and the couple rub each other up, love turns into hate. When Thérèse can no longer stand it and wants to report Laurent to the police as a murderer, he prepares poison for her. But mad with guilt, she stabs herself in front of his eyes, and Laurent drinks his own poison in horror. love turns into hate.
