In the authoritarian police state under the leadership of Baron Scarpia, dissenters have nothing to laugh about and are persecuted. The painter Mario Cavaradossi, lover of the famous opera singer Floria Tosca, helps Cesare Angelotti, the former consul of the defeated
Roman Republic, on the run and is therefore arrested. Scarpia also has personal motives, because he desires Tosca himself. Scarpia has the painter tortured in his palace and thus suppresses the secret
of Angelotti's whereabouts from Tosca . When Cavaradossi is sentenced to death and is to be executed in the Castel Sant'Angelo the next morning, Scarpia makes the desperate Tosca an offer ...
