The premiere of the opera Tosca took place on January 14, 1900 in Rome at the Teatro Costanzi. But eleven years earlier, the thirty-year-old composer saw the great tragic French actress Sarah Bernhardt in Tosca, a play based on the play by their contemporary French playwright Victorien Sardou. Intoxicated by the “divine Bernard”, Puccini wrote: “Thinking of 'Tosca'!
