When, in 1889, Puccini had the opportunity to see the famous Sarah Bernard as Tosca in Victorien Sardou's spectacular drama of the same name, written two years earlier, he was captivated by the idea of ​​writing an opera based on her story. Although he managed to realize this idea only a few years later, it did not stop occupying the composer at all. In the meantime, he created "Bohème", thereby consolidating his previously acquired fame with "Manon Lescaut", then it was the turn of "Tosca". However, a number of difficulties arise when writing it. Years before, Ricordi had commissioned the writing of an opera with the same plot to the composer Alberto Franchetti based on Ilica's libretto. However, Ricordi now withdraws his order from Franchetti and assigns it to Puccini, who immediately leaves for Paris and meets with the author of the drama.

            Sardou firmly insists that Puccini show him his plan for an opera based on the plot of his "Tosca" and only then gives his consent. He even claims a fairly significant royalty percentage. Once he had the writer's blessing, Puccini wasted no time in entrusting the writing of the text of his future opera to his librettists Giacozza and Ilica. Experienced theatergoers, they reworked the five-act drama into a three-act libretto. Victorien Sardou himself later admitted that, despite the cuts, the libretto not only did not take away from the content of the drama, but even made it more psychologically intense.

            In the summer of 1898, the forty-year-old Puccini began feverish work on the coveted "Tosca" and in less than a year and a half managed to complete his new masterpiece. The premiere of Tosca took place at the Roman Theater of Constanti on January 14th and was a huge success. In the same year, the opera was staged in London and Paris, and then in all the world's opera houses.

            През лятото на 1898 четиридесетгодишният Пучини започва трескава работа над жадуваната „Тоска“ и след по-малко от година и половина успява да завърши новия си шедьовър. Премиерата на „Тоска“ се състои в римския театър „Констанци“ на 14 януари и пожънва огромен успех. Още същата година операта се поставя в Лондон и Париж, а след това и във всички световни оперни театри.
