The program of the inaugural concert of the 66th Edition of the Festival dei Due Mondi is of great charm, entrusted to the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, in its third year in residence in Spoleto, under the guidance of the talented Czech director Jakub Hrůša, recently appointed music director of the Royal Opera House in London succeeding Antonio Pappano.
At the center is the music of Leoš Janáček of which Hrůša, born in Brno, is a compatriot and one of the most popular interpreters – his conducting of the opera Káťa Kabanová at the Salzburg Festival has recently enjoyed great success. Janáček's music is probably among the most expressive to be found in the 20th century, and Hrůša has made a Suite with sung scenes from the original work of the famous Cunning Little Vixen , with which this program opens. Inspired by a children's serial, the story of the fox Bystrouska(smart) is an example of unique musical theater of its kind and the story of the little animal is a first opportunity to reflect on the relationship between man and nature that underlies the entire Festival programme. The popular dimension is highly suggestive: at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Janáček made research into the songs and dances of Moravia one of the distinctive features of his music and his ethnomusicological research. In the Dances of Lachi , the homonymous eastern region of Czechoslovakia, we find popular melodies and traditions with which he reproduces the joyful inspiration of a folk performance in a personal key. The program closes with the Sinfonietta, perhaps his best known work, is a tribute to his city, of which he retraces its streets and symbolic places.
