When Giacomo Puccini was looking for a new subject for opera in the early 1920s, the world was in a phase of upheaval. The political situation was unstable. Fascism dawned in Italy. The rapid technological progress that fascinated Puccini throughout his life changed the basis of life and people's thinking. Puccini, who was over sixty, also had the feeling that he had reached a turning point in his compositional work. Plagued by self-doubt, he wanted to break out of the well-trodden waters of his operatic successes and create something new again. In this situation, he resorted to the story of the cruel Chinese princess Turandot, who does not want to belong to any man. To all suitors who ask for their hand, she asks unsolvable riddles and sends her to the scaffold if she fails - until the one who solves all the riddles comes along. theTurandot-Material opened up new options for Puccini: with it he could leave behind the realism of his previous operas and write a piece that reached into the large-scale mythical, and the foreign-Chinese aura of the story offered him the opportunity to enrich his composition with completely new colors. However, the project failed shortly before the goal: Puccini did not find a credible solution for the end of the opera - for the late transformation of the ice-cold princess into a lover. He fell into a writing crisis, contracted throat cancer and died before he could finish the opera's finale. What remained was a grandiose, contradictory, dazzling opera fragment with two vocal parts, which are among the most demanding dramatic roles in the Italian repertoire. Only the best of their craft come into question for Turandot and Prince Calaf: in Zurich they are the American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky and Piotr Beczała, who is making his role debut as Calaf. Director Sebastian Baumgarten and the German conductor Marc Albrecht take the fragmentary character of Puccini's last work seriously and also rise to the challenge of converting the Chinese exoticism and the pompous scenery that is inherent in the opera into a contemporary form.

Als Giacomo Puccini Anfang der 1920er Jahre nach einem neuen Opernstoff suchte, befand sich die Welt in einer Phase des Umbruchs. Die politischen Verhältnisse waren instabil. Der Faschismus dämmerte in Italien herauf. Der rasante technologische Fortschritt, von dem Puccini zeit seines Lebens fasziniert war, veränderte die Lebensgrundlage und das Denken der Menschen. Auch der über sechzigjährige Puccini hatte das Gefühl, an einem Wendepunkt seiner kompositorischen Arbeit angekommen zu sein. Von Selbstzweifeln geplagt wollte er aus den bewährten Fahrwassern seiner Opernerfolge ausbrechen und noch einmal etwas Neues schaffen. In dieser Situation griff er zu der Geschichte von der grausamen chinesischen Prinzessin Turandot, die keinem Mann gehören will. Allen Bewerbern, die um ihre Hand anhalten, stellt sie unlösbare Rätselfragen und schickt sie aufs Schafott, wenn sie an den Aufgaben scheitern – bis der eine kommt, der alle Rätsel löst. Der Turandot-Stoff eröffnete Puccini neue Optionen: Mit ihm konnte er den Realismus seiner vorhergehenden Opern hinter sich lassen und ein Stück schreiben, das ins grossformatig Mythische ausgreift, und die fremdländisch chinesische Aura der Geschichte bot ihm Gelegenheit, sein Komponieren durch völlig neue Farben zu bereichern. Allerdings scheiterte das Projekt kurz vor dem Ziel: Puccini fand keine glaubhafte Lösung für den Schluss der Oper – für die späte Verwandlung der eiskalten Prinzessin in eine Liebende. Er geriet in eine Schreibkrise, erkrankte an Kehlkopfkrebs und starb, bevor er das Finale der Oper beenden konnte. Was blieb, war ein grandioses, wiedersprüchlich schillerndes Opernfragment mit zwei Gesangspartien, die zu den anspruchsvollsten dramatischen Partien im italienischen Fach überhaupt gehören. Für Turandot und den Prinzen Calaf kommen nur die Besten ihrer Zunft in Frage: In Zürich sind das die amerikanische Sopranistin Sondra Radvanovsky und Piotr Beczała, der sein Rollendebüt als Calaf gibt. Regisseur Sebastian Baumgarten und der deutsche Dirigent Marc Albrecht nehmen den Fragmentcharakter von Puccinis letztem Werk ernst und stellen sich auch der Herausforderung, den chinesischen Exotismus und den Ausstattungspomp, der der Oper anhaftet, in eine zeitgemässe Form zu überführen.
