No Verdi opera has suffered as much from censorship as the Masquerade Ball. The work was made for the San Carlo Theater in Naples and was scheduled for the 1858 Carnival. The source was a libretto written for Scribe Auber, Gustave III ou Le bal masqué (Gustav III or the Masquerade Ball) and, like Verdi's opera, the Liberal III. The story of King Gustav of Sweden, who was indeed shot at a masquerade ball on 16 March 1792 in Stockholm.

In Verdi’s music, the wide-arched melodies are coupled with a pregnant, powerful rhythm, sometimes almost reminiscent of Beethoven. The band was enriched with a variety of shades. The way the choir is included is also new, especially in the generously constructed finale. The polyphony used in the ensembles, as a reflection of the psychology of persons of different character and emotion but singing at the same time, proves a further refinement of Verdi’s compositional technique. Surprisingly, in addition to many far-reaching elements of the music that already suggest the spirit of Aida and even Otello, Verdi also insisted on twists reminiscent of conventional, earlier works.
