Multidisciplinary musical theater shows the Chinese forerunner of the Cinderella story

If you know Cinderella, you know Ye Xian. Ye Xian, who predates the European fairytale, follows a path familiar to many, searching for a place to call home.  Untold  reveals new twists that bring Ye Xian's story to life in a transnational journey between and beyond different cultures. Co-created by composer Alex Ho and creative director and choreographer Julia Cheng, Untold weaves together movement and music into an intricate tapestry of colors, sounds, memories and dreams, envisioning a more hopeful future for Ye Xian and those to come after her . 

The original Chinese story follows a familiar story arc, but Untold adds new plot twists and complements the story with contemporary classical music, movement, and Chinese and Western instruments. A compelling performance that mixes different genres, art forms and cultures. Untold is part of the multi-year urban trajectory This is Rotterdam , winner of the Fedora Opera Prize 2023.

Als je Assepoester kent, ken je Ye Xian. Ye Xian, die het Europese sprookje voorafgaat, volgt een pad dat velen kennen, op zoek naar een plek om thuis te noemen. Untold onthult nieuwe wendingen waardoor Ye Xian’s verhaal in een transnationale reis tussen en voorbij verschillende culturen tot leven komt. Untold, dat mede is gecreëerd door componist Alex Ho en creatief directeur en choreograaf Julia Cheng, weeft beweging en muziek samen tot een ingewikkeld tapijt van kleuren, geluiden, herinneringen en dromen en verbeeldt een hoopvollere toekomst voor Ye Xian en degenen die na haar komen.

Het oorspronkelijke Chinese verhaal volgt een herkenbare verhaalboog, maar Untold voegt nieuwe plotwendingen toe en vult het verhaal aan met hedendaagse klassieke muziek, beweging en Chinese en westerse instrumenten. Een meeslepende voorstelling die verschillende genres, kunstvormen en culturen met elkaar vermengt.

Untold maakt onderdeel uit van het meerjarige stadstraject Dit is Rotterdam, winnaar van de Fedora Opera Prize 2023.
